The discovery brief

Where they look

A set, year, grade and condition search from a collector who knows exactly what they want

What they ask

"base set charizard 4/102 psa 10 for sale"

Why you are missing

Your listing is titled "BS Char 4/102 PSA10" and sold out last week

01

The story

Devon sells graded trading cards. His inventory is thousands of items and every single one is quantity one, so the defining fact of his store is that his best-ranking pages are the ones that already sold.

His titles are the shorthand he uses at the shop: set abbreviation, card number, grader, grade. Collectors search the same things spelled out in full, plus the year and the condition, and none of that vocabulary was in his listings.

Writing set, year, grade and condition into every listing, and redirecting sold items to the set page instead of a 404, turned a catalog that quietly destroyed its own SEO every week into one that compounds.

02

When SEO decides the sale

Three beats. Everything StoreSEO does on this page is aimed at the gap between the second and the third.

  1. 1

    The hunt

Collectors search a set, a number, a grade and a grader. Every term is exact and every one matters.

  2. 2

    The scarcity

Quantity is one. The listing that ranked is the listing that already sold, and the URL dies with it.

  3. 3

    The next one

A dead end sends them to a competitor. A redirect to the right set page keeps them.

03

What a store like this actually needs

01

Sold-out URLs that keep their value

When every item sells exactly once, dead pages are the normal state. Where they redirect decides whether years of accumulated authority survives.

02

Set, year, grade and condition as text

Collectors search identifiers with real precision. Shop shorthand in a title matches none of it.

03

Catalog-scale handling

Thousands of one-off listings arriving and leaving constantly makes per-item work impossible.

04

The fix

Three StoreSEO capabilities that do most of the work here. Each links to the guide that sets it up.

Redirect on out of stock

Sends a sold card to its set or category page instead of a dead end, so the authority it earned is not thrown away.

Bulk SEO optimization

Expands shop shorthand into full set, year, grade and condition language across thousands of listings at once.

Sitemap product control

Keeps crawl attention on what is actually available rather than on a growing pile of sold items.

The exact prompt

Connect your store via the StoreSEO MCP server or the AI Toolkit, then paste this into Claude or ChatGPT. It is written for this business, not as a generic template.

Nothing is written to your store without your say-so. Over MCP the agent shows you a preview and waits for confirmation before it changes anything in Shopify. The prompt opens by establishing a baseline, so a later run can show you what actually moved.

Copy & paste
Using StoreSEO, before you change anything: add my top competitors, add tracked keywords for my main market and language, and pull my Search Console insights so we have a baseline. Then rewrite my listings so each card states the full set name, year, card number, grader and grade as text rather than shop shorthand, set up out-of-stock redirects so sold cards point at their set page instead of 404ing, and review which sold listings still belong in the sitemap. Show me the preview before applying.

Two weeks later, run the measurement prompt on the Large catalogs playbook to see rank movement on the keywords this run started tracking.

What happens: Your assistant establishes a baseline first, then expands shorthand into collector vocabulary and stops sold inventory from destroying the authority it earned.

Questions

Every card I sell is one of one. Is SEO even worth it?

It is worth more here than in most catalogs, because the pages accumulate. A sold card that redirects to its set page keeps passing value to the next card in that set, whereas a 404 throws it away. Over a few thousand sales that difference compounds into whether the set pages rank at all.

Should I delete listings once they sell?

Redirect them rather than delete them. Deleting produces a 404 and loses whatever links and authority the listing earned. Redirecting to the set or category page keeps the value and gives the collector somewhere useful to land.
