The discovery brief

Where they look

A spec-plus-unit search from a contractor pricing a job

What they ask

"1/2 inch drywall 4x8 price per sheet near me"

Why you are missing

Your pricing is quote-gated and your page never states the unit

01

The story

Tomasz runs a builders merchant. His customers are contractors doing take-offs: they need a quantity of a specific material at a specific spec, and they are working out what the job costs before they quote it.

That search is a specification plus a unit — a thickness, a sheet size, a grade, a price per unit — and often a location, because materials are heavy and delivery radius decides who can even supply. His pages carried product names and a request-a-quote button.

Publishing specifications and units as text, stating the delivery area, and enabling local schema meant that the searches contractors actually run started reaching a merchant who could serve them.

02

When SEO decides the sale

Three beats. Everything StoreSEO does on this page is aimed at the gap between the second and the third.

  1. 1

    The take-off

A contractor is pricing a job. They search a specification and a unit, because that is how the estimate is built.

  2. 2

    The radius

Materials are heavy. Delivery distance decides the supplier as much as price does.

  3. 3

    The account

One job won becomes a standing trade account, which is why this traffic is worth more than it looks.

03

What a store like this actually needs

01

Specification and unit as text

Thickness, sheet size, grade, length, and the unit it is priced in. This is the query, and quote-gating usually hides all of it.

02

Delivery radius stated

Heavy materials make distance decisive. A supplier who does not say where they deliver is filtered out early.

03

Trade vocabulary, not consumer

Contractors and DIY buyers search the same materials in completely different words. The trade terms are the higher-value ones.

04

The fix

Three StoreSEO capabilities that do most of the work here. Each links to the guide that sets it up.

Local business schema

Tells search engines where you are and which area you serve, which for heavy materials is a primary ranking factor.

Collection page optimization

Material family pages match how a take-off is searched far better than individual SKUs.

FAQ schema on the storefront

Publishes delivery radius, minimum order, lead time and trade-account answers as structured data.

The exact prompt

Connect your store via the StoreSEO MCP server or the AI Toolkit, then paste this into Claude or ChatGPT. It is written for this business, not as a generic template.

Nothing is written to your store without your say-so. Over MCP the agent shows you a preview and waits for confirmation before it changes anything in Shopify. The prompt opens by establishing a baseline, so a later run can show you what actually moved.

Copy & paste
Using StoreSEO, before you change anything: add my competitors, add tracked keywords for my main market and language, and pull Search Console insights for a baseline. Then rewrite my product and collection pages so every material states its specification, dimensions, grade and the unit it is priced in as plain text, using trade vocabulary rather than consumer terms. Enable local business schema for my delivery area, and add FAQ schema covering delivery radius, minimum order, lead times and trade accounts. Show me the preview before applying.

Two weeks later, run the measurement prompt on the B2B & wholesale playbook to see rank movement on the keywords this run started tracking.

What happens: Your assistant publishes the spec-and-unit language contractors search and makes your delivery area explicit, which is what decides a heavy-materials supplier.

Questions

Our pricing is quote-only. Does that stop us ranking?

No, but it means the specification layer has to be public even though the price is not. Contractors search a spec and a unit to build an estimate; if your pages state the material, dimensions, grade and the unit it is sold in, you can rank for that search and still handle price by quote.

How is this different from the DIY and tools story?

Audience and vocabulary. DIY is a consumer buying one of something and searching in everyday words. This is a contractor pricing a job in trade terms and units, buying in quantity, and constrained by delivery radius. Same materials, different search entirely.
