How Much Does Shopify SEO Cost? Apps vs Agencies
Shopify SEO costs nothing to about $250 a month for an app based on catalog size, roughly $1,348 a month for a freelancer, or $1,000 to $10,000 for an agency, most landing between $2,500 and $5,000. Here is what each route buys and how to pick the cheapest one that works.

TL;DR: what each route costs, what it takes of your time, and who it fits.
| Route | Monthly cost | Time cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY (native fields + one tool) | $0 to $30/mo in tools | 3 to 6 hours a week, ongoing | An early-stage store with more time than budget |
| SEO app (StoreSEO) | $0 to $249.99/mo by catalog size | 1 to 2 hours a week reviewing AI output | Most stores from launch through several thousand SKUs |
| Freelancer | ~$1,348/mo average | Hours saved, hours spent briefing | A store that needs steady content, not a full technical audit |
| Agency retainer | $1,000 to $10,000/mo, most $2,500 to $5,000 | Near zero once onboarded | A store with budget for ongoing technical and content work at scale |
This is the StoreSEO blog, and StoreSEO is one of the four routes below, so the app pricing is partly our own. Every dollar figure in the table above and through this post is sourced and dated: StoreSEO’s own tiers come straight from its Shopify App Store listing, and the freelancer and agency numbers come from two independent pricing surveys, not our own guess. For the wider field of providers, our best Shopify SEO apps guide covers many more by name; this post is about the dollar figure across route types.
What Does A Shopify SEO Agency Actually Do For The Fee?
A monthly retainer usually buys three kinds of work: a technical audit and ongoing fixes (broken links, schema, page speed, crawl issues), content production (blog posts, product copy, landing pages), and link building or digital PR. Ahrefs’ pricing survey of 439 businesses, run in 2026, found that agencies charge an average of $3,209 a month, freelancers average $1,348 a month, and 63% of all businesses surveyed pay between $500 and $5,000 a month for outside SEO help. WebFX’s own pricing guide puts the typical range at $1,000 to $5,000 a month for a retainer, $75 to $200 an hour for project-based consulting, and $500 to $5,000 for a single defined project, with $2,500 a month as its most common client spend.
What you get for that fee varies far more than the price does. A $1,000 a month retainer usually buys a handful of on-page fixes and a couple of blog posts; a $5,000 a month retainer can include a full technical crawl, a content calendar with several posts a week, and active link outreach. Ask for a written scope before signing anything, covering exactly which of those three work types the fee includes.

What Do Apps Cost At 100, 1,000 And 10,000 Products?
An SEO app charges by what your store needs done automatically, usually gated by product count rather than by hours of human labor. StoreSEO’s own four tiers, checked on its Shopify App Store listing, run Free Forever for 25 products, Lite at $14.99 a month for 100 products with 1,000 AI credits, Essential at $39.99 a month for 250 products with 5,000 AI credits, and Advanced at $249.99 a month for 10,000 products with 50,000 AI credits. Every tier includes the AI Content Optimizer, which rewrites meta titles, descriptions and keywords from the product page itself, so the AI-credit allowance is usually the thing that decides which tier a growing store actually needs, not the product cap alone.
A 100-product store on Lite pays $14.99 a month for what would otherwise be hours of manual meta-description writing. A 1,000-product store sits between Essential and Advanced; most stores at that size stay on Essential until the product cap, not the AI-credit allowance, forces the upgrade. What Is The Cheapest Route That Actually Works?
The cheapest route is not always the lowest sticker price; it is the smallest spend that actually finishes the work your store needs. A brand-new store under 100 products with more time than budget can do real SEO on Shopify’s native title and meta fields plus a free-tier app, spending nothing beyond an optional low-cost research tool like Ahrefs Starter at $29 a month. A store whose technical SEO is already solid but whose content output can’t keep up is usually better served by a freelancer than an agency: freelancers average under half an agency’s monthly fee for comparable content work, per the Ahrefs survey above. An agency retainer earns its higher price only once a store needs coordinated work across technical fixes, content and link building at the same time, and has the budget to keep paying for it every month.

What Are The Red Flags In An SEO Quote?
Google’s own ranking algorithm has no fixed timeline and no seat reserved for any paid provider, so any agency or freelancer promising a guaranteed #1 ranking or a fixed date to reach page one is making a promise it cannot keep. Other warning signs: no named contact who can explain what last month’s fee actually paid for, a contract with no monthly report and no exit clause, and link-building volume quoted with no disclosed source list. A fair quote states its scope plainly (technical fixes, content, links, or all three), states hours or deliverables per month, offers a month-to-month option after an initial term, and gives you access to your own Google Search Console and analytics rather than a screenshot of theirs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Is Shopify SEO free?
The groundwork is free: Shopify’s native title, meta description and alt-text fields cost nothing to fill in, and StoreSEO’s Free Forever plan covers 25 products with 200 AI credits at no charge. Anything beyond that, an app tier, a freelancer or an agency, carries a monthly cost.
2. How much should a small Shopify store budget for SEO?
A store under a few hundred products with a limited budget usually does well on a paid app tier alone, $15 to $40 a month. That covers the technical baseline: schema, sitemaps and AI-assisted meta fields. Save a freelancer or agency for later, once traffic and revenue justify the higher spend.
3. Why do agency quotes vary so much for the same store?
Scope, not the store, drives the difference. A $1,000 a month quote usually covers on-page fixes and light content; a $5,000 a month quote can include full technical audits, a content calendar and active link outreach, per WebFX’s own pricing breakdown.
4. Does a more expensive SEO service rank a store faster?
Price mostly reflects the volume and scope of work delivered, not a faster or more favorable treatment from Google’s algorithm. A $5,000 a month retainer buys more hours and more deliverables than a $1,000 one, but neither buys a place in the ranking queue. A smaller, well-targeted scope of work can outperform a larger, unfocused one.
5. Can an SEO app replace an agency entirely?
For the technical baseline, mostly yes: schema, sitemaps, meta fields and AI-assisted copy are exactly what an app automates. An app does not do original link building or bespoke content strategy, which is where a freelancer or agency still adds work an app cannot.
6. What is the cheapest way to check if an SEO quote is fair?
Compare it against the two ranges in this post: Ahrefs’ surveyed average of $3,209 a month for agencies and $1,348 a month for freelancers, and WebFX’s $1,000 to $5,000 a month retainer range. A quote far outside both deserves a second look at what exactly it includes.
