Publish llms.txt and agents.md with Muse

Publishing llms.txt and agents.md with Muse means asking Meta's personal AI agent to read your store's discovery-file status in StoreSEO, then generate or reset the files that tell AI shopping agents what your store sells, after you confirm each live write.

Set up Muse for StoreSEO

Skip this if Muse is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the Muse page.

  1. 1

    Send this message to Muse

Paste it into a new chat with Muse in the app, on muse.ai or in WhatsApp. Muse is rolling out in the US first, so you need access to it before this works.

    new message to Muse
Add a custom connector for my Shopify SEO app StoreSEO:
    https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp
    - It is an MCP server over HTTP and it signs in with OAuth. Send me the sign-in link and I will approve it.
    - Once it is connected, show me my store's SEO score breakdown.
  2. 2

Approve the sign-in for your store

Open the sign-in link Muse sends back, pick your Shopify store in the browser and approve access. Meta does not review custom connectors, so only approve this one if you started it.

How does this work in Muse?

Begin with a question and no generation: is my llms.txt up to date, and is an agents.md live? Muse calls storeseo_start, then storeseo_get_llms_txt_status and storeseo_get_agents_md_status. The first reports saved settings, the latest generated version, whether a run is in progress and the public address where the file is served. The second says whether a custom agents.md is live or Shopify's native default still serves. Muse can add storeseo_list_llms_txt_versions to show which version is active, which matters because the live file is not always the newest one.

Generating is a different order of act. storeseo_generate_llms_txt writes templates/llms.txt.liquid into your live theme and uploads a copy to Shopify Files, and storeseo_generate_agents_md publishes live straight away, spends AI credit and replaces Shopify's native file. StoreSEO's instructions tell the agent to say that before it calls, and to wait for your yes. In Muse, expect a layered check: the agent's own question, possibly a Muse permission request, and the Sentinel that Meta describes as approving what leaves its Secure VM. Say which resource types the file should include, because a request to include products and collections but not blog posts is saved as settings for later runs.

Generation takes a minute or two, and Muse polls storeseo_get_llms_txt_status until generation_ongoing is false. On a phone, tell Muse to report back in the thread when it is done instead of waiting in the app. Afterward, ask it to read the public URL back to you so you can check the file reads like your store. Undoing is possible but destructive: deleting an llms.txt version or resetting agents.md cannot be undone, and deleting the active version promotes the next newest, so Muse should name the version that will go live.

Muse + StoreSEO Illustrative session
  1. You: Use StoreSEO to check my llms.txt and agents.md.

  2. storeseo_start read-only
  3. storeseo_get_llms_txt_status read-only
  4. storeseo_get_agents_md_status read-only
  5. Muse: Illustrative result: your llms.txt is 3 weeks old and settings changed since, so a rebuild is due. No custom agents.md is live. A new llms.txt writes a template into your live theme and uploads a copy to Shopify Files. Should I generate it?

  6. You: Yes, generate it.

  7. storeseo_generate_llms_txt needs approval
  8. Muse: Queued. I will check again until generation finishes, then read you the public address.

What StoreSEO does: llms.txt and agents.md

llms.txt is a curated map of your store for AI crawlers, and agents.md tells AI shopping agents who you are and how to buy. StoreSEO generates both from your store data and publishes them to your live theme; the agent checks status, generates, switches llms.txt versions and resets agents.md to Shopify's default.

Requires: agents.md generation spends AI Content Optimizer credit and needs at least one published product.

  1. 1

    Check what is live

The agent reads the llms.txt status (settings, latest version, whether a rebuild is due, public URL) and the agents.md status (custom file or Shopify's default, public URL).

  2. 2

    Warn before publishing

Generating llms.txt writes a template to your live theme and uploads a copy to Shopify Files in the same run, with no separate publish step. Generating agents.md publishes it live at once and spends credit. The agent says so and waits for your yes.

  3. 3

    Generate and wait

llms.txt generation takes a minute or two; the agent polls the status until it finishes. agents.md returns the published text and its URL straight away.

  4. 4

    Manage versions

StoreSEO keeps the latest ten llms.txt versions. The live file serves the active version, which is not always the newest, and any version can be made active again.

  5. 5

    Roll back

Deleting a version is permanent. Resetting agents.md drops the custom file so Shopify's default serves again, and there is no history to restore it from.

Rules Muse follows

  • The agent tells you that llms.txt generation writes to your live theme before it starts.
  • agents.md generation publishes live and spends credit, so the agent says both and waits for your yes.
  • Deleting an llms.txt version and resetting agents.md cannot be undone; the agent confirms each one.
  • Deleting the active llms.txt version promotes the next newest automatically, so the agent says which version will go live.

In Muse

A live theme write is not something to approve from a lock screen notification. Muse can surface its own permission request while you are away from the thread, and a quick yes to a message you did not read is the one case where the layers fail you. Open the thread, read what the agent says it will write and where, and answer there. If you want an agents.md gone, name reset in your message so Muse does not confuse it with regenerating.

What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.

Questions

Does Muse itself write my llms.txt?

No. StoreSEO composes llms.txt and agents.md from your store data on its own servers. Muse starts the run, watches its status and reports the result, and you confirm the live write first.

How do I remove a custom agents.md that Muse generated?

Ask Muse to reset it with storeseo_reset_agents_md. That discards the custom content for good, with no version history, and Shopify's native agents.md serves again.

What is the difference between llms.txt and agents.md?

llms.txt is a curated map of your store for AI crawlers and answer engines, served at /llms.txt. agents.md is the file AI shopping agents read to understand your brand and how to shop with you, served at /agents.md. StoreSEO can generate both.

Does generating llms.txt change my theme?

Yes. The same run writes an llms.txt template into your live theme and uploads a copy to Shopify Files. There is no separate publish step, which is why the agent should warn you before it starts.

Can I go back to an older llms.txt?

Yes. StoreSEO keeps the latest ten versions, and any of them can be made the active one, which republishes it to your storefront. Deleting a version is permanent.

Can I undo a generated agents.md?

You can reset it, which makes Shopify's native default serve again within seconds. The custom text is discarded with no history, so keep a copy if you might want it back.
