Publish llms.txt and agents.md with Grok Bot

Publishing llms.txt and agents.md with Grok Bot means asking a Bot to check which AI discovery files your Shopify store serves, then having StoreSEO generate and publish the missing ones to your live theme after you agree to each.

Set up Grok Bot for StoreSEO

Skip this if Grok Bot is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the Grok Bot page.

  1. 1

Ask your Bot to add StoreSEO

In a chat with your Bot, ask it to add a custom remote HTTPS MCP server with this URL. xAI's documentation says a plugin added from your own chat is personal and account-wide, so every Bot on your account can use it. Complete the StoreSEO sign-in when the browser opens: pick your Shopify store and approve access.

    Prompt
Add a custom remote HTTPS MCP server called StoreSEO with the URL https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp and sign me in.
  2. 2

Attach it and check it works

In a chat, type @ to attach the StoreSEO connector to the task, then ask this to confirm the connection.

    Prompt
Use @StoreSEO to show me my store's SEO score breakdown.

How does this work in Grok Bot?

Two files tell AI crawlers and AI shopping agents about your store: llms.txt, a curated map of your content, and agents.md, a description of who you are and how to buy. You attach StoreSEO to a Bot chat with @ and ask whether either file is live and current. The Bot calls storeseo_start, storeseo_get_llms_txt_status and storeseo_get_agents_md_status, all reads, and tells you what is served, when llms.txt last generated, and whether your settings changed since. If you want to see an older llms.txt version, storeseo_list_llms_txt_versions lists the latest ten.

Generation is where the Bot has to be honest about cost and reach. storeseo_generate_llms_txt writes a template into your live theme and uploads a copy to Shopify Files in the same run, and it takes about one to two minutes. The Bot should say so, wait for your yes, then poll the status call until generation is no longer ongoing. A cloud computer is a good place to wait, because the Bot can carry on without your device. storeseo_generate_agents_md also publishes live and spends AI credit, and storeseo_reset_agents_md hands the file back to Shopify's default with no history.

There is a natural routine here, and it is a quiet one. Ask the Bot every Monday to read both statuses and tell you if llms.txt is missing, if the active version is older than the newest, or if a rebuild is due. StoreSEO can regenerate llms.txt on its own saved schedule, so the routine does not need to generate anything. Leave generation, activation, deletion and reset to a conversation where you can answer the Bot's question.

  5. Grok Bot: No llms.txt is live and agents.md is still Shopify's default. Generating llms.txt writes a template to your live theme and a copy to Shopify Files and takes a minute or two. Should I generate it?

  6. You: Yes, generate llms.txt.

What to ask Grok Bot

Prompt 1
Use @StoreSEO to tell me whether my llms.txt and agents.md are live, when llms.txt last generated and which version is active.
Prompt 2
Explain what generating llms.txt will write to my theme and Shopify Files, and wait for my yes before you start it.
Prompt 3
Create a Monday routine that reads both file statuses with @StoreSEO and reports anything missing or out of date. Report only and generate nothing.
  • Is my llms.txt up to date, and which version is live right now?
  • Generate a new llms.txt that includes products and collections but not blog posts. Warn me before it goes live.
  • Show me my llms.txt versions and switch back to the one from last week.
  • Does my store serve a custom agents.md or Shopify's default?
  • Write an agents.md for my store and publish it. Tell me what it costs first.
  • Reset agents.md to Shopify's default.

What StoreSEO does: llms.txt and agents.md

llms.txt is a curated map of your store for AI crawlers, and agents.md tells AI shopping agents who you are and how to buy. StoreSEO generates both from your store data and publishes them to your live theme; the agent checks status, generates, switches llms.txt versions and resets agents.md to Shopify's default.

Requires: agents.md generation spends AI Content Optimizer credit and needs at least one published product.

  1. 1

    Check what is live

The agent reads the llms.txt status (settings, latest version, whether a rebuild is due, public URL) and the agents.md status (custom file or Shopify's default, public URL).

  2. 2

    Warn before publishing

Generating llms.txt writes a template to your live theme and uploads a copy to Shopify Files in the same run, with no separate publish step. Generating agents.md publishes it live at once and spends credit. The agent says so and waits for your yes.

  3. 3

    Generate and wait

llms.txt generation takes a minute or two; the agent polls the status until it finishes. agents.md returns the published text and its URL straight away.

  4. 4

    Manage versions

StoreSEO keeps the latest ten llms.txt versions. The live file serves the active version, which is not always the newest, and any version can be made active again.

  5. 5

    Roll back

Deleting a version is permanent. Resetting agents.md drops the custom file so Shopify's default serves again, and there is no history to restore it from.

Rules Grok Bot follows

  • The agent tells you that llms.txt generation writes to your live theme before it starts.
  • agents.md generation publishes live and spends credit, so the agent says both and waits for your yes.
  • Deleting an llms.txt version and resetting agents.md cannot be undone; the agent confirms each one.
  • Deleting the active llms.txt version promotes the next newest automatically, so the agent says which version will go live.

In Grok Bot

A routine can easily drift into doing the work. If the instruction says keep llms.txt current, a Bot may decide to call storeseo_generate_llms_txt on every run, which publishes to the live theme with no one to say yes. Word the routine as read the statuses and report, and add an Ask first rule in Auto-review for the generate, activate, delete and reset tools. Remember that a Test run performs real work, so test only a routine that reads.

What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.

Questions

Will a Grok Bot routine regenerate llms.txt on its own?

Only if you word the routine that way, and it is better not to. StoreSEO has its own saved schedule for llms.txt, so a routine can just read the status and report whether a rebuild is due.

How do I undo agents.md from Grok Bot?

Ask the Bot to call storeseo_reset_agents_md, which makes Shopify's default file serve again within seconds. The custom text is gone for good, so the Bot should confirm with you first.

What is the difference between llms.txt and agents.md?

llms.txt is a curated map of your store for AI crawlers and answer engines, served at /llms.txt. agents.md is the file AI shopping agents read to understand your brand and how to shop with you, served at /agents.md. StoreSEO can generate both.

Does generating llms.txt change my theme?

Yes. The same run writes an llms.txt template into your live theme and uploads a copy to Shopify Files. There is no separate publish step, which is why the agent should warn you before it starts.

Can I go back to an older llms.txt?

Yes. StoreSEO keeps the latest ten versions, and any of them can be made the active one, which republishes it to your storefront. Deleting a version is permanent.

Can I undo a generated agents.md?

You can reset it, which makes Shopify's native default serve again within seconds. The custom text is discarded with no history, so keep a copy if you might want it back.
