Grok Bot Image SEO and alt text

Optimize images and alt text with Grok Bot

Fixing Shopify image SEO with Grok Bot means asking a persistent xAI Bot to list the heaviest or unlabelled images through StoreSEO and then optimize them one call at a time, so compression, alt text and file names get done in a long-running session.

Set up Grok Bot for StoreSEO

Skip this if Grok Bot is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the Grok Bot page.

  1. 1

Ask your Bot to add StoreSEO

In a chat with your Bot, ask it to add a custom remote HTTPS MCP server with this URL. xAI's documentation says a plugin added from your own chat is personal and account-wide, so every Bot on your account can use it. Complete the StoreSEO sign-in when the browser opens: pick your Shopify store and approve access.

    Prompt
Add a custom remote HTTPS MCP server called StoreSEO with the URL https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp and sign me in.
  2. 2

Attach it and check it works

In a chat, type @ to attach the StoreSEO connector to the task, then ask this to confirm the connection.

    Prompt
Use @StoreSEO to show me my store's SEO score breakdown.

How does this work in Grok Bot?

Image work is repetitive, which suits a Bot that keeps its place in a conversation. You attach StoreSEO with @ and ask which product images are heaviest or have no alt text. The Bot calls storeseo_start and then storeseo_list_images, which sorts by file size by default and reports compression, alt text and file name status for every image. That listing is a read, so the first answer is a shortlist with sizes and a count, and nothing has been spent yet. You can filter in plain words, for instance only images with no alt text on one collection.

The write step is storeseo_optimize_image, and it takes one image per call with every wanted axis in the same call. A Bot does not run these in parallel against the same image, which matters because a file rename swaps the underlying Shopify media. Each call returns a report per axis, so the Bot can tell you that compression applied while alt text spent AI credit, or that compression was refused because the Image Optimizer add-on is missing. If you dislike one result, ask the Bot to call storeseo_restore_image for that axis.

Because a Bot can keep going while you do something else, say the scope up front: five images, product images only, alt text and compression but no renaming. A renamed file gets a new storefront URL, so anything that hard-coded the old address keeps serving the old file, and the Bot should tell you which images it renamed. Do not put the optimize step in a routine. Use a routine at most to count unlabelled images each week, and do the optimizing in a conversation where you can answer.

Grok Bot + StoreSEO Illustrative session
  1. You: Use @StoreSEO to find my heaviest product images with no alt text.

  2. storeseo_start read-only
  3. storeseo_list_images read-only
  4. Grok Bot: Illustrative result: 5 heavy images have no alt text. Compression uses your Image Optimizer quota and alt text spends AI credit. Should I optimize the first image with both?

  5. You: Yes, do the first one.

  6. storeseo_optimize_image needs approval
  7. Grok Bot: Compression applied and alt text written. Shall I continue with the second image?

What to ask Grok Bot

Prompt 1
Use @StoreSEO to list my ten heaviest product images and tell me which have no alt text. Read only for now.
Prompt 2
Optimize the alt text and compression of those first five images, one at a time, and tell me the result for each axis.
Prompt 3
Restore the file name on the last image you optimized, I do not want the new URL.
  • Find my ten heaviest unoptimized product images and compress them. Tell me the quota it will use first.
  • Which product images have no alt text at all? Write alt text for the ones on my best seller.
  • Optimize every image on the product Canvas Tote: compression, alt text and file name.
  • Restore the original alt text on the last image you changed.
  • Give my collection images descriptive file names, and warn me which URLs will change.

What StoreSEO does: image seo and alt text

StoreSEO tracks three things per image: file-size compression, alt text and file name. The agent finds the heaviest or unlabelled images, optimizes them one call per image, and can restore any of the three if you do not like the result.

Requires: Compression needs the Image Optimizer add-on and counts against its monthly quota; alt text and file names spend AI Content Optimizer credit.

  1. 1

    Find the images

The agent lists product, collection or article images, heaviest unoptimized first by default. It can filter to images with no alt text, or scope the list to one product by title.

  2. 2

    Check what it found

A title search can also match image file names from other resources, so the agent checks each row belongs to the product you meant.

  3. 3

    Agree the scope and cost

Compression uses image quota and alt text and file names use AI credit, so the agent confirms before working through many images.

  4. 4

    Optimize one image per call

Each call takes the axes you want: compression, alt text, file name or all three. The axes always run compression, then file name, then alt text, and the response reports each one separately.

  5. 5

    Report or restore

The agent reports what applied, what was already done and what was refused. If a result is wrong, the restore tool brings back the original file, alt text or name.

Image SEO and alt text reference

Axes per image Compression, alt text, file name
Image sources Products, collections and articles (pages have no images)
Batching One image per call; never two calls on the same image at once
Compression Image Optimizer add-on and its monthly quota; an already compressed image is reported as already applied
Alt text and file name AI Content Optimizer credit; both together are billed as one generation
File name change Renames the file on Shopify and changes the image's storefront URL
Collection and article renames Re-upload the image, so the call can take a couple of minutes
Restore Reverts compression, alt text or file name per axis
Score impact Alt text and file names count on products, collections and articles; compression counts on products

Rules Grok Bot follows

  • The agent confirms the number of images and the kind of spend before a bulk run.
  • One image per call, all wanted axes together; never parallel calls on the same image.
  • A renamed image has a new URL, so the agent tells you, because anything that hard-coded the old URL keeps serving the old file.
  • If a response is lost, the agent re-lists the image instead of retrying, because a retry regenerates and spends again.
  • A refused axis, for example compression without the add-on, is reported as such while the other axes still apply.

In Grok Bot

A Bot is happy to keep working, which makes Always allow on storeseo_optimize_image tempting for a batch of fifty images. Once saved, that rule means the client no longer stops between images, and each call spends Image Optimizer quota or AI credit. Use Allow once for a first image, state the number of images in your request, and use an Ask first rule in Auto-review if you want a pause before every call. If a response is lost, have the Bot re-list the image rather than retry.

What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.

Questions

Can Grok Bot optimize many images while I am away?

It can keep working in a long conversation, but each storeseo_optimize_image call is a write that spends quota or credit. Set the number of images in your request and keep an Ask first rule on that tool unless you accept an unattended run.

What if I dislike how Grok Bot renamed or captioned an image?

Ask it to call storeseo_restore_image for that image and name the axis, which can be compression, alt text or file name. Restoring a file name changes the image URL back as well.

Can the agent compress images without the Image Optimizer add-on?

No. Compression needs the Image Optimizer add-on and counts against its monthly quota. Alt text and file names work without it and spend AI Content Optimizer credit instead.

Can I undo an image optimization?

Yes. The restore tool reverts compression, alt text or file name for one image, per axis. Restoring compression brings back the original file.

Why did my image URL change?

Giving an image a new file name renames the file on Shopify and re-points its storefront URL. Pages that use the image through Shopify keep working, but anything that hard-coded the old URL keeps the old file.

Can I write my own file name or alt text through the agent?

No. StoreSEO writes the alt text and file name from the resource's own context. You can steer the language, and you can always edit alt text yourself in Shopify admin.
