Publish llms.txt and agents.md with ChatGPT dots
Publishing llms.txt and agents.md with a ChatGPT dot and StoreSEO means using an always-on agent to keep watch over the two discovery files AI crawlers and shopping agents read, while generating or replacing either file stays a deliberate step you take in a chat.

Set up ChatGPT dots for StoreSEO
Skip this if ChatGPT dots is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the ChatGPT dots page.
- 1
Create the StoreSEO app in ChatGPT
OpenAI's help center says plugins are shared across dots and ChatGPT, so you set StoreSEO up once. In ChatGPT on the web, turn on Developer mode under Settings, Security and login, open Plugins, select the plus button and create an app named StoreSEO with this MCP server URL and OAuth. Sign in when the browser asks: pick your Shopify store and approve access. If ChatGPT already has the StoreSEO app, skip this step.

Make sure your dot can see it
Open your dot's profile, then Customize and Plugins, and check StoreSEO is connected. Then give your dot a first task that names StoreSEO.
PromptUsing StoreSEO, show me my store's SEO score breakdown.
How does this work in ChatGPT dots?
These two files are published straight to your live theme, which makes the job a good example of what to automate and what to hold back. The watching is perfect for a dot. A weekly task calls storeseo_get_llms_txt_status and storeseo_get_agents_md_status, and the report says whether /llms.txt is serving, when it was last generated, whether settings changed since then so a rebuild is due, and whether a custom agents.md is live or Shopify's native default still serves. storeseo_list_llms_txt_versions adds which version is active. All are reads.
The publishing is not a read. storeseo_generate_llms_txt writes templates/llms.txt.liquid into the live theme and uploads a copy to Shopify Files, and it runs for a minute or two, so the agent polls status until generation is done. storeseo_generate_agents_md spends AI credit and publishes live at once, replacing Shopify's default. Activating an older version with storeseo_activate_llms_txt_version changes what the public file says, and storeseo_delete_llms_txt_version and storeseo_reset_agents_md discard things permanently. Do those in a supervised ChatGPT conversation, where the agent has told you what goes live and you have said yes.
A useful pairing: have the dot flag a stale file, then come to the chat with the report and say regenerate it. The dot saves you from remembering to check, and you keep the one-line approval on the part that touches your theme. Run the same check again after publishing, so the next report confirms the new version is the active one.

You: Every Monday, check my llms.txt and agents.md with StoreSEO. Report only.
- storeseo_get_llms_txt_status read-only
- storeseo_get_agents_md_status read-only

ChatGPT dots: llms.txt is live but settings changed after the last generation, so a rebuild is due. agents.md is still Shopify's default. Regenerate llms.txt now? It writes to your live theme.
-
You: Yes, regenerate it.
- storeseo_generate_llms_txt needs approval
-
ChatGPT dots: Queued. I will poll the status until generation finishes and report the new version.
What to ask ChatGPT dots
Every Monday, use StoreSEO to check whether my llms.txt and agents.md are live and whether a rebuild is due. Report only.
Which llms.txt version is active, and how does it differ from the newest one?
Regenerate llms.txt now and tell me everything it will write to my theme before you start.
- Is my llms.txt up to date, and which version is live right now?
- Generate a new llms.txt that includes products and collections but not blog posts. Warn me before it goes live.
- Show me my llms.txt versions and switch back to the one from last week.
- Does my store serve a custom agents.md or Shopify's default?
- Write an agents.md for my store and publish it. Tell me what it costs first.
- Reset agents.md to Shopify's default.
What StoreSEO does: llms.txt and agents.md
llms.txt is a curated map of your store for AI crawlers, and agents.md tells AI shopping agents who you are and how to buy. StoreSEO generates both from your store data and publishes them to your live theme; the agent checks status, generates, switches llms.txt versions and resets agents.md to Shopify's default.
Requires: agents.md generation spends AI Content Optimizer credit and needs at least one published product.
- 1
Check what is live
The agent reads the llms.txt status (settings, latest version, whether a rebuild is due, public URL) and the agents.md status (custom file or Shopify's default, public URL).
- 2
Warn before publishing
Generating llms.txt writes a template to your live theme and uploads a copy to Shopify Files in the same run, with no separate publish step. Generating agents.md publishes it live at once and spends credit. The agent says so and waits for your yes.
- 3
Generate and wait
llms.txt generation takes a minute or two; the agent polls the status until it finishes. agents.md returns the published text and its URL straight away.
- 4
Manage versions
StoreSEO keeps the latest ten llms.txt versions. The live file serves the active version, which is not always the newest, and any version can be made active again.
- 5
Roll back
Deleting a version is permanent. Resetting agents.md drops the custom file so Shopify's default serves again, and there is no history to restore it from.

Rules ChatGPT dots follows
- The agent tells you that llms.txt generation writes to your live theme before it starts.
- agents.md generation publishes live and spends credit, so the agent says both and waits for your yes.
- Deleting an llms.txt version and resetting agents.md cannot be undone; the agent confirms each one.
- Deleting the active llms.txt version promotes the next newest automatically, so the agent says which version will go live.
In ChatGPT dots
Generation writes to your live theme, and agents.md generation spends AI credit and goes live immediately. A scheduled dot cannot wait for a yes, so keep the timer to the two status reads and the version list. StoreSEO's own settings can also schedule llms.txt regeneration, which is separate from your dot's task, so check what is already scheduled before you add a second thing that publishes. Deleting a version and resetting agents.md cannot be undone.
What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.
Questions
Can my dot regenerate llms.txt automatically each week?
It could be told to, but generation writes to your live theme and uploads to Shopify Files. We suggest the dot reports whether a rebuild is due and you approve regeneration in a chat.
How do I undo agents.md if I do not like it?
storeseo_reset_agents_md removes the custom file so Shopify's native default serves again. It discards the custom content with no version history, so it is a chat decision, not a scheduled one.
What is the difference between llms.txt and agents.md?
llms.txt is a curated map of your store for AI crawlers and answer engines, served at /llms.txt. agents.md is the file AI shopping agents read to understand your brand and how to shop with you, served at /agents.md. StoreSEO can generate both.
Does generating llms.txt change my theme?
Yes. The same run writes an llms.txt template into your live theme and uploads a copy to Shopify Files. There is no separate publish step, which is why the agent should warn you before it starts.
Can I go back to an older llms.txt?
Yes. StoreSEO keeps the latest ten versions, and any of them can be made the active one, which republishes it to your storefront. Deleting a version is permanent.
Can I undo a generated agents.md?
You can reset it, which makes Shopify's native default serve again within seconds. The custom text is discarded with no history, so keep a copy if you might want it back.
