Track keyword rankings with ChatGPT dots
Tracking keyword rankings with a ChatGPT dot means letting an always-on agent read your StoreSEO rank data on a timer and bring back what moved, which is the one SEO job where a recurring report is the point.

Create the StoreSEO app in ChatGPT
OpenAI's help center says plugins are shared across dots and ChatGPT, so you set StoreSEO up once. In ChatGPT on the web, turn on Developer mode under Settings, Security and login, open Plugins, select the plus button and create an app named StoreSEO with this MCP server URL and OAuth. Sign in when the browser asks: pick your Shopify store and approve access. If ChatGPT already has the StoreSEO app, skip this step.

Make sure your dot can see it
Open your dot's profile, then Customize and Plugins, and check StoreSEO is connected. Then give your dot a first task that names StoreSEO.
PromptUsing StoreSEO, show me my store's SEO score breakdown.
How does this work in ChatGPT dots?
Rank tracking is a time series, and a dot is built for time series. Once keywords are being tracked, a Monday task calls storeseo_list_keywords for the latest Google position, rank delta, SERP features and competitor positions, and storeseo_get_keyword_history for any keyword that jumped or dropped. The report you want reads like a short briefing: the biggest climbers, the biggest losers, the keywords where a tracked competitor now sits above you. All of that is reading, but rank tracking is a Pro plan feature, so on other plans these calls will be refused and the dot should say so.
Setting up the tracked list is a supervised job. storeseo_add_keywords needs the location and language to match the values from storeseo_list_rank_locations and storeseo_list_rank_languages exactly, uses a country as the location and counts against your plan's keyword limit. The response only confirms the keywords were queued, and positions show up later in storeseo_list_keywords, so the dot should not announce a rank straight after adding one. Competitors work the same way, up to five, through storeseo_add_competitors. Deleting a keyword with storeseo_delete_keyword removes its entire rank history, and there is no undo.
Keyword clusters sit in between, and they are the one place a dot's patience helps. storeseo_generate_keyword_cluster spends AI credit, takes a couple of minutes and needs a focus keyword on the product, and storeseo_get_keyword_cluster is the poll. A dot is comfortable waiting on a poll like that, but the generation is a spend, so it belongs in a chat with your yes.

You: Every Monday, use StoreSEO to report my keyword rank changes. Report only.
- storeseo_list_keywords read-only
- storeseo_get_keyword_history read-only

ChatGPT dots: Linen shirt moved from 14 to 9 this week, and a tracked competitor passed you on summer dress. Add a keyword for maxi dress on mobile in the United States?
-
You: Yes, add it.
- storeseo_add_keywords needs approval
-
ChatGPT dots: Queued. Its first position will appear in next week's report.
What to ask ChatGPT dots
Every Monday, use StoreSEO to list my tracked keywords and report the five biggest rank changes and any competitor that overtook me. Report only.
Add the keyword linen shirt for the United States in English on mobile, after checking the exact location and language values.
Build a keyword cluster for the product Linen Shirt and tell me the credit cost first.
- Track shopify linen shirts and linen shirt for men in the United States on mobile.
- How have my tracked keywords moved this month, and where do my competitors rank?
- Show the rank history for organic cotton tote since July.
- Add example-competitor.com as a competitor.
- Build a keyword cluster for my best seller and tell me the estimated credit first.
- Which tracked keywords dropped out of the top ten?
What StoreSEO does: keyword rank tracking
StoreSEO checks your Google rank for tracked keywords by country, language and device, records the history and compares competitor domains. Keyword clusters group related keywords around a product's focus keyword with search volume and difficulty.
Requires: Rank and competitor tracking are Pro plan tools. Keyword clusters spend AI Content Optimizer credit.
- 1
Pick the market
The agent looks up the exact country and language names the tracker accepts, because new keywords must use them verbatim.
- 2
Add keywords
After your yes it adds keywords with a country, language and device. Checks run in the background, so positions appear later.
- 3
Read ranks and history
It lists your keywords with the latest Google position, change, SERP features and competitor positions, and reads the dated history for any keyword.
- 4
Compare competitors
Up to five competitor domains are tracked alongside your keywords. To change one, it is deleted and the new domain added.
- 5
Build a cluster
For a product with a focus keyword, StoreSEO generates a cluster of related keywords in the background; the agent states the estimated credit first and polls until it is ready.

Rules ChatGPT dots follows
- On a plan without rank tracking, the agent explains the upgrade instead of calling the rank tools.
- Country and language names come from the lookup tools, never typed from memory.
- Deleting a keyword or competitor erases its history for good, so the agent confirms each one.
- A cluster needs a focus keyword set in the StoreSEO app; the agent states the estimated credit and waits for your yes.
In ChatGPT dots
Rank tracking and competitors are Pro plan tools, so a scheduled dot on another plan will hit refusals every Monday and should tell you that instead of reporting an empty week. Ranks are also checked asynchronously: a keyword you add now has no position until a later check, so a report run straight afterwards will not show it. Keep adding and deleting keywords, and cluster generation, in a supervised chat.
What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.
Questions
Is keyword tracking a good job for a ChatGPT dot?
Yes, for the reading. A weekly task over storeseo_list_keywords and storeseo_get_keyword_history reports movers and competitor changes. Adding keywords and building clusters stays in a chat, because they use plan limits and credit.
Why does a keyword I just added show no rank?
StoreSEO queues the rank check when you add a keyword, and the position appears in storeseo_list_keywords after the check finishes. A dot reading straight away will find nothing yet.
Which plan do I need for keyword tracking through an agent?
Rank tracking and competitor tracking are Pro plan tools. On other plans the agent should explain that instead of calling them. Keyword clusters work on plans with AI Content Optimizer credit.
Does StoreSEO track rankings in AI search engines?
No. The rank tracker checks Google results by country, language and device. AI visibility is handled by the GEO score, llms.txt and agents.md jobs instead.
Why are new keywords pending?
Rank checks run in the background. Adding a keyword queues the first check, and its position appears in the keyword list once that check completes.
What is a keyword cluster?
A group of related keywords built around a product's focus keyword, sorted by search volume and scored for relevance and difficulty. It shows which wider terms the product page can target.
