Set up Cursor for StoreSEO

Skip this if Cursor is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the Cursor page.

  1. 1

    Add StoreSEO to mcp.json

    Put this in ~/.cursor/mcp.json to use StoreSEO in every project, or in .cursor/mcp.json inside one theme project. In the StoreSEO app's setup guide the same JSON goes into Settings, Tools and MCP, New MCP server.

    JSON
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "storeseo": {
          "url": "https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp"
        }
      }
    }
  2. 2

    Sign in to your store

    Open Cursor's MCP settings (the Customize page in current versions), find storeseo and sign in when Cursor asks. A browser window opens: pick your Shopify store and approve access.

    Prompt
    Use StoreSEO to show me my store's SEO score breakdown.
  3. 3

    Switch off four StoreSEO tools

    StoreSEO has 44 tools and Cursor stops at about 40 active ones across all servers. In the storeseo entry in Cursor's MCP settings, turn off at least four you do not need. The four rank and competitor lookups are a good first choice if you are not on Pro.

    Prompt
    storeseo_list_rank_locations
    storeseo_list_rank_languages
    storeseo_add_competitors
    storeseo_delete_competitor

How does this work in Cursor?

You are in Cursor with a theme or storefront project open, and you ask the agent in plain words to track a keyword or report on the ones you follow. The agent calls storeseo_start, then storeseo_list_rank_locations and storeseo_list_rank_languages so the country and language are the exact names the tracker accepts, and it shows you what it intends to add. Cursor asks for approval before it uses an MCP tool by default, and StoreSEO also tells the agent to wait for your yes before storeseo_add_keywords, which counts against your plan's keyword limit.

Reading ranks is where the editor helps. storeseo_list_keywords returns each keyword's latest Google position, change, SERP features and competitor positions, and storeseo_get_keyword_history gives the dated checks. Ask Cursor to put the result in a notes file in the project, or to compare tracked keywords with the titles and meta in your theme files and point at pages that target a term you rank poorly for. Positions are checked in the background, so a keyword added a moment ago shows as pending until its first check completes.

Competitors and clusters follow the same loop. storeseo_add_competitors accepts up to five domains in total, and changing one means deleting it and adding the new domain, each after your yes. For a cluster, the agent states the estimated AI credit, waits, calls storeseo_generate_keyword_cluster and polls storeseo_get_keyword_cluster for a couple of minutes, then lists related keywords by search volume. Rank and competitor tools need the Pro plan, and in Cursor there is one more thing to check first: whether those tools are switched on.

  8. Cursor: Added and queued. Ask me for the keyword list in a few minutes to see its first position.

What to ask Cursor

Prompt 1
Use StoreSEO to list my tracked keywords and write rank-notes.md in this project with position, change and competitors.
Prompt 2
Track linen shirt for men in the United States on mobile. Confirm the exact country and language names first.
Prompt 3
Build a keyword cluster for my top product and tell me the estimated credit before you run it.
  • Track shopify linen shirts and linen shirt for men in the United States on mobile.
  • How have my tracked keywords moved this month, and where do my competitors rank?
  • Show the rank history for organic cotton tote since July.
  • Add example-competitor.com as a competitor.
  • Build a keyword cluster for my best seller and tell me the estimated credit first.
  • Which tracked keywords dropped out of the top ten?

What StoreSEO does: keyword rank tracking

StoreSEO checks your Google rank for tracked keywords by country, language and device, records the history and compares competitor domains. Keyword clusters group related keywords around a product's focus keyword with search volume and difficulty.

Requires: Rank and competitor tracking are Pro plan tools. Keyword clusters spend AI Content Optimizer credit.

  1. 1

    Pick the market

    The agent looks up the exact country and language names the tracker accepts, because new keywords must use them verbatim.

  2. 2

    Add keywords

    After your yes it adds keywords with a country, language and device. Checks run in the background, so positions appear later.

  3. 3

    Read ranks and history

    It lists your keywords with the latest Google position, change, SERP features and competitor positions, and reads the dated history for any keyword.

  4. 4

    Compare competitors

    Up to five competitor domains are tracked alongside your keywords. To change one, it is deleted and the new domain added.

  5. 5

    Build a cluster

    For a product with a focus keyword, StoreSEO generates a cluster of related keywords in the background; the agent states the estimated credit first and polls until it is ready.

Rules Cursor follows

  • On a plan without rank tracking, the agent explains the upgrade instead of calling the rank tools.
  • Country and language names come from the lookup tools, never typed from memory.
  • Deleting a keyword or competitor erases its history for good, so the agent confirms each one.
  • A cluster needs a focus keyword set in the StoreSEO app; the agent states the estimated credit and waits for your yes.

In Cursor

StoreSEO has 44 tools and Cursor allows about 40 active tools across all your servers, so you were told to switch off at least four. If you switched off the rank and competitor lookups, storeseo_add_keywords or storeseo_list_rank_locations may be among them, and the agent will say it cannot track keywords even though you are on Pro. Re-enable the rank tools in Cursor's MCP settings and switch off tools for jobs you do not use, such as image or sitemap tools, instead.

What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.

Questions

Why can Cursor not add keywords even though StoreSEO is connected?

Cursor allows about 40 active tools, so you may have switched off some of StoreSEO's 44. Check that the rank location, rank language and add keywords tools are enabled in Cursor's MCP settings, and that your StoreSEO plan is Pro.

Can Cursor compare my tracked keywords with my theme files?

Yes. Cursor reads your project, and StoreSEO supplies positions through storeseo_list_keywords, so the agent can point at templates or content where a term you rank poorly for is missing. It cannot edit keywords in StoreSEO without your yes.

Which plan do I need for keyword tracking through an agent?

Rank tracking and competitor tracking are Pro plan tools. On other plans the agent should explain that instead of calling them. Keyword clusters work on plans with AI Content Optimizer credit.

Does StoreSEO track rankings in AI search engines?

No. The rank tracker checks Google results by country, language and device. AI visibility is handled by the GEO score, llms.txt and agents.md jobs instead.

Why are new keywords pending?

Rank checks run in the background. Adding a keyword queues the first check, and its position appears in the keyword list once that check completes.

What is a keyword cluster?

A group of related keywords built around a product's focus keyword, sorted by search volume and scored for relevance and difficulty. It shows which wider terms the product page can target.
