Track keyword rankings with OpenClaw
Tracking keyword rankings with OpenClaw means asking your self-hosted agent, from WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack or its Control UI, to manage StoreSEO's Google rank tracker, and optionally letting an automation read your rankings on a schedule and post the movers to a chat.

Set up OpenClaw for StoreSEO
Skip this if OpenClaw is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the OpenClaw page.
- 1
Add StoreSEO to OpenClaw
Run this on the installation that owns the connector. The --auth oauth flag marks the server as an OAuth server, which is what openclaw mcp login needs.
Terminalopenclaw mcp add storeseo \ --url https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp \ --transport streamable-http \ --auth oauth
- 2
Sign in to your store
The login prints an authorization URL. Open it in a browser, pick your Shopify store and approve access. OpenClaw captures the redirect and saves the credentials.
Terminalopenclaw mcp login storeseo
- 3
Check the connection
The probe opens a live connection and reports the tools the server offers. A saved server entry proves nothing until the probe passes.
Terminalopenclaw mcp doctor storeseo --probe
How does this work in OpenClaw?
OpenClaw runs on your own machine or server and you talk to it in a chat app, so keyword tracking becomes a message. You write track shopify linen shirts in the United States on mobile, and the agent opens a session with storeseo_start, looks up the accepted names with storeseo_list_rank_locations and storeseo_list_rank_languages and replies with the exact rows it would add. After you answer yes in that same chat it calls storeseo_add_keywords. Checks run in the background, so the first positions appear a little later in storeseo_list_keywords.
The part that sets OpenClaw apart is its scheduler. An automation, which openclaw cron also reaches, can wake the agent every Monday in an isolated session, read storeseo_list_keywords for the latest positions and changes, read storeseo_get_keyword_history for the keywords that moved, and announce the summary in a Telegram or Slack channel. That is a ranking report that arrives without you opening anything. Competitor positions come along in the same list, and you can list the domains you track with storeseo_list_competitors.
Keep the scheduled prompt to reads. Nobody is there to say yes at eight on a Monday, so the job should never add, delete or generate anything; changes such as a new keyword or a new competitor domain belong in a message you can answer. Rank and competitor tracking are Pro plan tools and the tracker checks Google only.
-
You: Track shopify linen shirts in the United States on mobile.
- storeseo_start read-only
- storeseo_list_rank_locations read-only
- storeseo_list_rank_languages read-only
-
OpenClaw: I would add shopify linen shirts for United States, English, mobile. It counts against your keyword limit. Shall I add it?
-
You: Yes.
- storeseo_add_keywords needs approval
-
OpenClaw: Queued. Your Monday report will include its position once the first check completes.
What to ask OpenClaw
Use StoreSEO to list my tracked keywords and tell me which three dropped the most since the last check. Read only.
Create a Monday 8am automation that reports my keyword position changes and competitor positions to this Telegram chat. Reads only: do not add, delete or generate anything.

- Which tracked keywords dropped out of the top ten?
What StoreSEO does: keyword rank tracking
StoreSEO checks your Google rank for tracked keywords by country, language and device, records the history and compares competitor domains. Keyword clusters group related keywords around a product's focus keyword with search volume and difficulty.
Requires: Rank and competitor tracking are Pro plan tools. Keyword clusters spend AI Content Optimizer credit.
- 1
Pick the market
The agent looks up the exact country and language names the tracker accepts, because new keywords must use them verbatim.
- 2
Add keywords
After your yes it adds keywords with a country, language and device. Checks run in the background, so positions appear later.
- 3
Read ranks and history
It lists your keywords with the latest Google position, change, SERP features and competitor positions, and reads the dated history for any keyword.
- 4
Compare competitors
Up to five competitor domains are tracked alongside your keywords. To change one, it is deleted and the new domain added.
- 5
Build a cluster
For a product with a focus keyword, StoreSEO generates a cluster of related keywords in the background; the agent states the estimated credit first and polls until it is ready.

Rules OpenClaw follows
- On a plan without rank tracking, the agent explains the upgrade instead of calling the rank tools.
- Country and language names come from the lookup tools, never typed from memory.
- Deleting a keyword or competitor erases its history for good, so the agent confirms each one.
- A cluster needs a focus keyword set in the StoreSEO app; the agent states the estimated credit and waits for your yes.
In OpenClaw
Run the openclaw mcp commands on the installation that owns the connector; a Gateway or agent on another host needs its own reload or restart before it sees the storeseo server. OpenClaw has a per-server approval setting, set with openclaw mcp configure storeseo --approval, and the add and delete tools are writes, so do not leave it on a mode that skips the check if you want the client to stop before them. A scheduled automation cannot wait for a yes, so write it as report-only and never let it call storeseo_delete_keyword, which erases a keyword's rank history for good.
What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.
Questions
Can OpenClaw send me a weekly keyword ranking report?
Yes. An OpenClaw automation can run on a schedule in an isolated session, read your tracked keywords and their changes through StoreSEO and announce the result in a chat channel such as Telegram. Keep the prompt to reads.
Can a scheduled OpenClaw job add or delete keywords?
It should not. A scheduled run has nobody to say yes, and deleting a keyword removes its whole rank history permanently. Ask for adds and deletes in a chat message you can answer.
Which plan do I need for keyword tracking through an agent?
Rank tracking and competitor tracking are Pro plan tools. On other plans the agent should explain that instead of calling them. Keyword clusters work on plans with AI Content Optimizer credit.
Does StoreSEO track rankings in AI search engines?
No. The rank tracker checks Google results by country, language and device. AI visibility is handled by the GEO score, llms.txt and agents.md jobs instead.
Why are new keywords pending?
Rank checks run in the background. Adding a keyword queues the first check, and its position appears in the keyword list once that check completes.
What is a keyword cluster?
A group of related keywords built around a product's focus keyword, sorted by search volume and scored for relevance and difficulty. It shows which wider terms the product page can target.
