Track keyword rankings with ChatGPT
Tracking keyword rankings with ChatGPT means using the StoreSEO app you created in developer mode to ask where your Shopify store ranks on Google, add new keywords to track and compare against competitor domains from a ChatGPT conversation.

Set up ChatGPT for StoreSEO
Skip this if ChatGPT is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the ChatGPT page.
- 1
Turn on developer mode
In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode. If your menu shows Apps and Connectors with Advanced settings instead, the same switch lives there. OpenAI lists developer mode for Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web.

Create the app with the StoreSEO MCP URL
Open Plugins and select the plus button to create a developer-mode app. Name it StoreSEO, paste this as the MCP server URL and choose OAuth. Sign in when the browser asks: pick your Shopify store and approve access.

Use it in a chat
The app appears in the composer's Developer mode tool during conversations. Select StoreSEO there, then ask this to confirm the connection works.
PromptUsing the StoreSEO app, show me my store's SEO score breakdown.
How does this work in ChatGPT?
You are in a ChatGPT conversation with the StoreSEO app attached, and the first thing ChatGPT does with a request like how are my tracked keywords doing is call storeseo_start. Reading is the comfortable part of this job in ChatGPT: storeseo_list_keywords returns each keyword's latest Google position, change, SERP features and competitor positions, and storeseo_get_keyword_history returns the dated checks behind one of them. Ask for the keywords that fell out of the top ten, or for a comparison by country, and ChatGPT turns the rows into a table.
Adding keywords is where ChatGPT's developer mode shows. Before storeseo_add_keywords, ChatGPT first calls storeseo_list_rank_locations and storeseo_list_rank_languages so the country and language match the tracker's list exactly, and StoreSEO tells it to confirm the keyword, market and device with you. Then ChatGPT's own write-action approval appears, and you can inspect the payload before you allow it. The approval can be remembered for the rest of the conversation, which is convenient for a batch of keywords but deserves care, because the same remembered approval would cover a delete later in the chat.
Competitor tracking and clusters follow the same pattern. storeseo_add_competitors takes up to five domains in total, and there is no edit: to swap one, the agent deletes it with storeseo_delete_competitor and adds the new domain, after your yes on each. A cluster for a product starts with the credit estimate stated to you, then ChatGPT polls storeseo_get_keyword_cluster until the background job ends and lists related keywords by search volume. Rank and competitor tools need the Pro plan.
-
You: Add example-competitor.com as a competitor and show how they rank against my keywords.
- storeseo_start read-only
- storeseo_list_competitors read-only
-
ChatGPT: You track two competitors, so this would be the third of five slots. StoreSEO normalizes the domain, so it will be stored as example-competitor.com. Add it?
-
You: Yes.
- storeseo_add_competitors needs approval
- storeseo_list_keywords read-only
-
ChatGPT: Added. Its positions on your keywords appear once the background checks run, so some cells are still empty.
What to ask ChatGPT
Using the StoreSEO app, show my tracked keywords with their latest Google position and what changed since the last check.
Add example-competitor.com as a competitor. Tell me how many of the five slots that uses before you add it.
Show the rank history for organic cotton tote since July and say whether the drop came from a competitor moving up.
- Track shopify linen shirts and linen shirt for men in the United States on mobile.
- How have my tracked keywords moved this month, and where do my competitors rank?
- Show the rank history for organic cotton tote since July.
- Add example-competitor.com as a competitor.
- Build a keyword cluster for my best seller and tell me the estimated credit first.
- Which tracked keywords dropped out of the top ten?
What StoreSEO does: keyword rank tracking
StoreSEO checks your Google rank for tracked keywords by country, language and device, records the history and compares competitor domains. Keyword clusters group related keywords around a product's focus keyword with search volume and difficulty.
Requires: Rank and competitor tracking are Pro plan tools. Keyword clusters spend AI Content Optimizer credit.
- 1
Pick the market
The agent looks up the exact country and language names the tracker accepts, because new keywords must use them verbatim.
- 2
Add keywords
After your yes it adds keywords with a country, language and device. Checks run in the background, so positions appear later.
- 3
Read ranks and history
It lists your keywords with the latest Google position, change, SERP features and competitor positions, and reads the dated history for any keyword.
- 4
Compare competitors
Up to five competitor domains are tracked alongside your keywords. To change one, it is deleted and the new domain added.
- 5
Build a cluster
For a product with a focus keyword, StoreSEO generates a cluster of related keywords in the background; the agent states the estimated credit first and polls until it is ready.

Rules ChatGPT follows
- On a plan without rank tracking, the agent explains the upgrade instead of calling the rank tools.
- Country and language names come from the lookup tools, never typed from memory.
- Deleting a keyword or competitor erases its history for good, so the agent confirms each one.
- A cluster needs a focus keyword set in the StoreSEO app; the agent states the estimated credit and waits for your yes.
In ChatGPT
Write actions depend on your ChatGPT plan. OpenAI's developer guide lists developer mode for several plans, while OpenAI's help center, as we read it, gives Pro accounts read access only and puts write actions in beta on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. On a read-only setup ChatGPT can still read ranks, history and competitor positions, but it cannot add or delete keywords, so do those from the StoreSEO app or another agent. Be careful with the option that remembers approval for the conversation before any delete.
What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.
Questions
Can ChatGPT delete a tracked keyword in StoreSEO?
Yes, with the storeseo_delete_keyword tool, when your plan allows write actions. It removes the keyword and its whole rank history for good, so read the approval payload before you allow it and avoid remembering approval for the conversation.
Why does ChatGPT list countries before adding a keyword?
The tracker accepts only exact country and language names from its own lists, so ChatGPT looks them up with the rank location and language tools instead of typing them from memory. That avoids a keyword being rejected.
Which plan do I need for keyword tracking through an agent?
Rank tracking and competitor tracking are Pro plan tools. On other plans the agent should explain that instead of calling them. Keyword clusters work on plans with AI Content Optimizer credit.
Does StoreSEO track rankings in AI search engines?
No. The rank tracker checks Google results by country, language and device. AI visibility is handled by the GEO score, llms.txt and agents.md jobs instead.
Why are new keywords pending?
Rank checks run in the background. Adding a keyword queues the first check, and its position appears in the keyword list once that check completes.
What is a keyword cluster?
A group of related keywords built around a product's focus keyword, sorted by search volume and scored for relevance and difficulty. It shows which wider terms the product page can target.
