ChatGPT AI search readiness

Get products ready for AI search with ChatGPT

Getting products ready for AI search with ChatGPT means connecting StoreSEO as a custom MCP app, then letting ChatGPT scan a product description for AI shopping agents, put StoreSEO's questions to you, and write a stronger description from your answers.

Set up ChatGPT for StoreSEO

Skip this if ChatGPT is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the ChatGPT page.

  1. 1

    Turn on developer mode

In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode. If your menu shows Apps and Connectors with Advanced settings instead, the same switch lives there. OpenAI lists developer mode for Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web.

  2. 2

Create the app with the StoreSEO MCP URL

Open Plugins and select the plus button to create a developer-mode app. Name it StoreSEO, paste this as the MCP server URL and choose OAuth. Sign in when the browser asks: pick your Shopify store and approve access.

    https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp
  3. 3

    Use it in a chat

The app appears in the composer's Developer mode tool during conversations. Select StoreSEO there, then ask this to confirm the connection works.

    Prompt
Using the StoreSEO app, show me my store's SEO score breakdown.

How does this work in ChatGPT?

You work in a ChatGPT conversation with the StoreSEO app selected, usually in developer mode, because that is where OpenAI lets a connected server do more than read. A request such as: scan the description of my Ceramic Pour Over for AI shopping agents, starts with storeseo_start and then storeseo_get_resource_seo for the product. That tells ChatGPT the GEO score and whether the product has a focus keyword, which this job needs and which only the StoreSEO app can set. Then it calls storeseo_scan_product_description, which spends a few AI credits and scores the description on seven pillars: identity, materials, dimensions, features, use cases, what is included and care.

The scan returns questions for the facts StoreSEO cannot infer, and ChatGPT is supposed to put them to you word for word and in order, not answer them itself. This is where a chat window is a good fit: you type the real materials, the dimensions and what is in the box into the reply box, one message. ChatGPT then calls storeseo_write_product_description with your answers. StoreSEO writes the copy itself, so you cannot paste in a finished description for it to save. The write replaces the live description in Shopify immediately, so ChatGPT should ask first, and the response includes the previous description once, which you should ask ChatGPT to paste back into the chat so you keep a copy.

FAQs and the AI snippet are the other half of the checklist. ChatGPT previews them with storeseo_preview_resource_optimization, shows the draft and the projected GEO score, and applies it after your yes. ChatGPT also shows each tool payload for you to read before you approve it, and that payload is the last chance to see exactly what is about to be sent to your store.

  1. You: Scan the description of Ceramic Pour Over for AI shopping agents.

  2. storeseo_start read-only
  3. storeseo_scan_product_description preview
  4. ChatGPT: Three pillars are missing: materials, dimensions and what is included. StoreSEO asks: What is the dripper made of, and what finish does it have?

  5. You: Stoneware, matte glaze. It is 12 cm wide, fits size 2 filters, and ships with 40 paper filters.

  6. ChatGPT: That covers the gaps. Writing it replaces the live description now, with no undo in StoreSEO. I will paste the old text back to you. Write it?

  7. You: Yes, write it.

What to ask ChatGPT

Prompt 1
Scan the description of my best-selling product for AI shopping agents and ask me every question StoreSEO returns, word for word.
Prompt 2
Rewrite the description of Ceramic Pour Over from my answers. Paste the old description back to me before and after you write.
Prompt 3
Which products have a GEO score under 50, and which of those are missing a focus keyword?
  • Which of my products have the lowest GEO score, and what is missing for AI shopping agents?
  • Make the product Merino Beanie ready for AI search: FAQs, AI snippet and product schema. Preview first.
  • Scan the description of my best seller for AI agents and ask me the questions it needs.
  • Rewrite the description of Ceramic Pour Over from my answers. Keep a copy of the old one for me.
  • Is product JSON-LD schema enabled on my store? If not, explain what turning it on changes.

What StoreSEO does: ai search readiness

GEO is StoreSEO's AI readiness score for products. The agent reads which GEO criteria fail, fixes the ones a tool can fix (FAQs, AI snippet, alt text, product schema), and can rewrite a thin description from your own answers to StoreSEO's questions.

Requires: FAQs, AI snippets and descriptions spend AI Content Optimizer credit. The product needs a focus keyword, set in the StoreSEO app, before a description scan or rewrite.

  1. 1

    Read the GEO checklist

The agent reads the product's GEO block: the score and every AI-readiness criterion that passes or fails.

  2. 2

Turn on product schema if it is off

Product JSON-LD is a shop-wide setting, so enabling it clears that criterion for every product at once. If you then decide not to apply the rest, the agent switches back off only the schema it turned on.

  3. 3

Preview FAQs and the AI snippet

The preview generates FAQs and an AI snippet (summary, benefits, best for) and projects the new SEO and GEO scores without saving.

  4. 4

    Scan the description

For a thin or missing description, StoreSEO scores it on seven pillars (identity, materials, dimensions, features, use cases, what is included, care) and returns questions. The agent asks you each one, word for word.

  5. 5

    Write and apply

With your answers, StoreSEO writes the description and saves it immediately; the response holds the only copy of the old text. The previewed FAQs and snippet are applied after your yes.

Rules ChatGPT follows

  • The scan's questions go to you word for word and in order; the agent does not answer them for you.
  • A description is only written without questions when you decline to answer or authorize a bulk run without them.
  • Writing a description replaces the current one at once with no undo, so the agent asks first and keeps the old text the response returns.
  • If the agent enabled product schema for this flow and you stop before applying, it turns that schema back off; it never disables a schema you already had on.
  • Criteria only you can fix get one link to the product's fix page, not a link per criterion.

In ChatGPT

ChatGPT connects from OpenAI's servers, and which plan can use write actions is not the same everywhere. OpenAI's developer guide lists developer mode for several paid plans, while its help center, as we read it, gives Pro accounts read access only and puts write actions in beta on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. If writes are not available to you, use ChatGPT to scan and report and finish the rewrite in the StoreSEO app. Because a description write has no undo, read the payload before approving and avoid the option that remembers approval for the rest of the conversation.

What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.

Questions

Can ChatGPT rewrite a Shopify product description through StoreSEO?

Yes, if your ChatGPT plan allows write actions for connected apps. It scans first, asks you StoreSEO's questions, then calls the write tool with your answers. StoreSEO writes the copy itself and saves it to Shopify immediately.

Why will StoreSEO not accept a description I wrote myself?

The write tool takes your answers to the scan questions, not finished text. Facts you want in the copy belong in those answers, and StoreSEO writes the description around them and re-checks it. To keep your own wording, edit the description in Shopify admin.

What is a GEO score in StoreSEO?

GEO is StoreSEO's AI readiness score for products. It measures how well a product can be understood by AI shopping agents and generative search, using criteria such as FAQs, an AI snippet, image alt text, product schema and the quality of the description.

Can I undo a rewritten product description?

Not inside StoreSEO. The new description is saved immediately and StoreSEO keeps no revision history. The response returns the previous description once, so ask the agent to keep it for you before it writes.

Why does the agent ask me questions before writing a description?

StoreSEO scans the description on seven pillars and returns questions for the facts it cannot infer, such as materials or what is in the box. Your answers become stated facts in the new copy instead of guesses.

Does enabling product schema affect every product?

Yes. Product JSON-LD is a shop-wide setting, so turning it on clears that criterion for every product at once, and turning it off removes it everywhere.
