How to Connect StoreSEO MCP to ChatGPT
ChatGPT is OpenAI’s AI assistant. You talk to it in a chat on the web or in an app, and it can answer questions, write and analyze, and take actions through connected tools.
This guide connects ChatGPT to the StoreSEO MCP server at https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp. Once connected, ChatGPT can read your Shopify store’s SEO scores and settings and, when you agree, apply optimized meta, alt text, schema and other SEO changes. For what to ask once you are set up, see StoreSEO for ChatGPT.
Before You Start
- Server URL:
https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp - Sign-in: You sign in with StoreSEO in the browser: pick your Shopify store and approve access. ChatGPT can register itself through dynamic client registration, so there is no token to create or paste.
- Plan: The MCP server works on any active StoreSEO plan, including the free plan. A store with no active plan gets a message with a link to choose one in the app.
- Access token (if you need one): create it in the StoreSEO app under Settings, AI Toolkit. Treat it like a password.
Connect StoreSEO to ChatGPT
Step 1: Turn on developer mode
In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode. If your menu shows Apps and Connectors with Advanced settings instead, the same switch lives there. OpenAI lists developer mode for Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web.

Step 2: Create the app with the StoreSEO MCP URL
Open Plugins and select the plus button to create a developer-mode app. Name it StoreSEO, paste this as the MCP server URL and choose OAuth. Sign in when the browser asks: pick your Shopify store and approve access.

Step 3: Use it in a chat
The app appears in the composer’s Developer mode tool during conversations. Select StoreSEO there, then ask this to confirm the connection works.

Other Ways to Connect
Option: Ask a workspace admin to publish it
On Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces OpenAI’s help center puts the controls under Settings, Apps, so an admin or owner may need to create and publish the app for you. Give them the same URL.

Check the Connection
Start a new chat and send this prompt. ChatGPT should call StoreSEO and answer with your store’s real SEO score.

What to Ask ChatGPT
- Using the StoreSEO app, what is my store’s SEO score and what are the three biggest problems?
- Which products have meta descriptions that are too short? Preview new ones for the first five.
- Show me the images with no alt text on my best-selling collection.
- Is my store ready for AI shopping assistants? Check my llms.txt status and AI settings.
- Show my Search Console clicks and impressions for the last 28 days.
How Approvals Work
Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client’s own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.
Things to Know About ChatGPT
- ChatGPT connects from OpenAI’s servers, not from your computer. The StoreSEO MCP URL is public, so there is nothing to open on your side.
- Write actions depend on your ChatGPT plan. OpenAI’s developer guide lists developer mode for Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web, while OpenAI’s help center, as we read it, puts full MCP support with write actions in beta on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces and gives Pro accounts read access only. On a plan without write actions, use ChatGPT for audits and reports and apply fixes from the StoreSEO app or another agent.
- OpenAI marks developer mode as higher risk because a connected server can read and, with write actions, change your data. Read each payload before you approve, and be careful with the option that remembers approval for the rest of a conversation.
- If you do not see developer mode under Settings, Security and login, check your plan and, in a workspace, ask an admin whether it is enabled.
Disconnect
Remove the StoreSEO server in ChatGPT, then revoke the connection or the access token in the StoreSEO app under Settings, AI Toolkit, where every connected client is listed.
