How to Connect StoreSEO MCP to Hermes Agent
Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent from Nous Research. It keeps memory across sessions, runs from a terminal or from chat apps such as Telegram, Discord and Slack, and loads skills from its own folder under ~/.hermes.
This guide connects Hermes Agent to the StoreSEO MCP server at https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp. Once connected, Hermes Agent can read your Shopify store’s SEO scores and settings and, when you agree, apply optimized meta, alt text, schema and other SEO changes. For what to ask once you are set up, see StoreSEO for Hermes Agent.
Before You Start
- Server URL:
https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp - Sign-in: Set auth: oauth and run hermes mcp login storeseo: pick your Shopify store in the browser and approve. Hermes caches the tokens locally and refreshes them. Without a browser, send a StoreSEO personal access token from Settings, AI Toolkit as an Authorization header.
- Plan: The MCP server works on any active StoreSEO plan, including the free plan. A store with no active plan gets a message with a link to choose one in the app.
- Access token (if you need one): create it in the StoreSEO app under Settings, AI Toolkit. Treat it like a password.
Connect StoreSEO to Hermes Agent
Step 1: Add StoreSEO to config.yaml
Add this under mcp_servers in ~/.hermes/config.yaml. If the file already has an mcp_servers block, add only the storeseo entry. Then start a new Hermes session, or run /reload-mcp in the one that is open.
mcp_servers:
storeseo:
url: "https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp"
auth: oauth
Step 2: Sign in to your store
On first connect Hermes prints an authorize URL and waits for the sign-in. Run this command to start it yourself or to re-authorize later. Pick your Shopify store and approve. Hermes caches the tokens in ~/.hermes/mcp-tokens/storeseo.json.
hermes mcp login storeseo
Other Ways to Connect
Option: Connect with an access token
On a machine with no browser, generate a token in StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit and send it as a header in place of auth: oauth. Keep config.yaml out of version control when it holds a token.
mcp_servers:
storeseo:
url: "https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp"
headers:
Authorization: "Bearer YOUR_TOKEN"
Check the Connection
Start a new session and send this prompt. Hermes Agent should call StoreSEO and answer with your store’s real SEO score.
Use StoreSEO to show me my store's SEO score breakdown.
What to Ask Hermes Agent
- Use StoreSEO to list my products scoring under 50 and preview new meta for the first five.
- Which products have no alt text on their images? Show me the list before writing anything.
- Pull my Search Console queries from the last 28 days and tell me which ones sit between positions 8 and 20.
- Is my llms.txt current? If not, say what generating a new one will publish and cost before you run it.
- Summarize my store’s SEO score breakdown in five lines.
How Approvals Work
Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client’s own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.
Things to Know About Hermes Agent
- Start a new session or run /reload-mcp after editing config.yaml, otherwise the open session does not see the storeseo server.
- A token in config.yaml is a secret. Keep the file out of version control, and revoke the token in StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit if it leaks.
- StoreSEO has 44 tools. If you want a read-only agent, use Hermes’ tools include list to expose only the StoreSEO list and get tools.
- A scheduled run has nobody to say yes. Keep cron jobs to reads and reports, and ask for changes in a chat you can answer.
Send a weekly SEO report with hermes cron
hermes cron create takes a schedule and a prompt, and —deliver sends the result to a chat target. Inside a chat you can use /cron add with the same arguments. A scheduled run should be report-only: ask for reads, because nobody is there to say yes to a write, and do not tell the job to apply or generate anything.
hermes cron create "every monday 9am" \
"Use StoreSEO to report my SEO score breakdown and the five lowest-scoring products. Read only: do not preview, apply or generate anything." \
--name "Monday SEO report" \
--deliver telegram
Disconnect
Remove the StoreSEO server in Hermes Agent, then revoke the connection or the access token in the StoreSEO app under Settings, AI Toolkit, where every connected client is listed.
