Run Your Shopify SEO from Hermes Agent
Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent from Nous Research that keeps memory across sessions, works from a terminal or from chat apps, and runs scheduled jobs of its own. Connected to StoreSEO through the MCP server, it audits your store's SEO, previews optimized content and applies what you approve, on request or on a timer.
- Three lines in ~/.hermes/config.yaml
- OAuth through your Shopify admin

You: Which pages rank on page two in Google, and what is the weakest one on my store?
- storeseo_start read-only
- storeseo_get_search_console_insights read-only
- storeseo_list_resources read-only
- storeseo_preview_resource_optimization preview

Hermes Agent: The Linen Shirt page gets impressions but has a thin meta description. StoreSEO drafted a new meta title, description and FAQ. The preview used AI credit and nothing is saved yet. Apply it?
-
You: Yes, apply it.
- storeseo_apply_resource_optimization needs approval
-
Hermes Agent: Applied. The page re-scored higher. Next I would fix the alt text on its images. Want that?

How do I connect Hermes Agent to StoreSEO?
- 1
Add StoreSEO to config.yaml
Add this under mcp_servers in ~/.hermes/config.yaml. If the file already has an mcp_servers block, add only the storeseo entry. Then start a new Hermes session, or run /reload-mcp in the one that is open.
YAMLmcp_servers: storeseo: url: "https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp" auth: oauth - 2
Sign in to your store
On first connect Hermes prints an authorize URL and waits for the sign-in. Run this command to start it yourself or to re-authorize later. Pick your Shopify store and approve. Hermes caches the tokens in ~/.hermes/mcp-tokens/storeseo.json.
Terminalhermes mcp login storeseo
- 3
Or connect with an access token Optional
On a machine with no browser, generate a token in StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit and send it as a header in place of auth: oauth. Keep config.yaml out of version control when it holds a token.
YAMLmcp_servers: storeseo: url: "https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp" headers: Authorization: "Bearer YOUR_TOKEN"
Sign-in
Set auth: oauth and run hermes mcp login storeseo: pick your Shopify store in the browser and approve. Hermes caches the tokens locally and refreshes them. Without a browser, send a StoreSEO personal access token from Settings, AI Toolkit as an Authorization header.

What is Hermes Agent?
Hermes Agent is an open-source AI agent from Nous Research. It keeps memory across sessions, runs from a terminal or from chat apps such as Telegram, Discord and Slack, and loads skills from its own folder under ~/.hermes.
It connects to remote MCP servers through an mcp_servers block in ~/.hermes/config.yaml. A server entry needs a url, then either auth: oauth with hermes mcp login, or an Authorization header. Hermes handles discovery, PKCE and token refresh, caches tokens locally, and lets you narrow a server's tools with include and exclude lists.
Hermes also has a built-in scheduler. hermes cron create takes a schedule and a prompt, and delivers the result to a chat target such as Telegram, so a check can run on its own and arrive where you read your messages.
Why use Hermes Agent with StoreSEO?
Memory across sessions
Hermes remembers what it learned earlier, so a follow-up such as continue with the next five products does not start from scratch. StoreSEO still opens its own session for the store snapshot.
Scheduled SEO reports
hermes cron create runs a prompt on a schedule and delivers it to a chat target. Use it for a weekly score summary or a Search Console review that lands without you asking.
Smaller tool surface if you want it
Hermes tool filters let you include or exclude StoreSEO tools by name or pattern, so a reporting agent can be limited to reads while another keeps the full set.
Good to know
- Start a new session or run /reload-mcp after editing config.yaml, otherwise the open session does not see the storeseo server.
- A token in config.yaml is a secret. Keep the file out of version control, and revoke the token in StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit if it leaks.
- StoreSEO has 44 tools. If you want a read-only agent, use Hermes' tools include list to expose only the StoreSEO list and get tools.
- A scheduled run has nobody to say yes. Keep cron jobs to reads and reports, and ask for changes in a chat you can answer.
What can you ask Hermes Agent to do in StoreSEO?
Use StoreSEO to list my products scoring under 50 and preview new meta for the first five.
Which products have no alt text on their images? Show me the list before writing anything.
Pull my Search Console queries from the last 28 days and tell me which ones sit between positions 8 and 20.
Is my llms.txt current? If not, say what generating a new one will publish and cost before you run it.
Summarize my store's SEO score breakdown in five lines.
Send a weekly SEO report with hermes cron
hermes cron create takes a schedule and a prompt, and --deliver sends the result to a chat target. Inside a chat you can use /cron add with the same arguments. A scheduled run should be report-only: ask for reads, because nobody is there to say yes to a write, and do not tell the job to apply or generate anything.
hermes cron create "every monday 9am" \ "Use StoreSEO to report my SEO score breakdown and the five lowest-scoring products. Read only: do not preview, apply or generate anything." \ --name "Monday SEO report" \ --deliver telegram
Hermes Agent guides by job
Each guide covers one StoreSEO job end to end in Hermes Agent: setup, prompts, an example session, the rules and the limits.
Which way should you connect?
MCP server with OAuth
- Best for
- Claude, ChatGPT and any client that supports remote MCP sign-in
- Sign-in
- Pick your store in Shopify and approve once
- What you get
- All 44 tools, scoped to the store you approved
MCP server with an access token
- Best for
- Terminal agents and editors, or any client without OAuth
- Sign-in
- Generate a named token in Settings, AI Toolkit and send it as a Bearer header
- What you get
- The same 44 tools; revoke the token in the app to cut access
Shopify Sidekick
- Best for
- Merchants who stay inside Shopify admin
- Sign-in
- Nothing to add: StoreSEO is installed in your store
- What you get
- SEO answers and deep links to the fix page, not the MCP tools
What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.
Questions
How do I connect Hermes Agent to StoreSEO?
Add an mcp_servers entry named storeseo to ~/.hermes/config.yaml with the url https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp and auth: oauth. Run hermes mcp login storeseo, pick your Shopify store in the browser and approve, then start a new session or run /reload-mcp.
Do I need a StoreSEO API key for Hermes Agent?
No. With auth: oauth Hermes signs in through your Shopify admin and caches the tokens it receives. A personal access token from StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit is the alternative, sent as an Authorization header for machines with no browser.
Where does Hermes store the StoreSEO sign-in?
The server entry lives in ~/.hermes/config.yaml, and the OAuth tokens are cached at ~/.hermes/mcp-tokens/storeseo.json. Hermes reuses them on later runs until a refresh fails, and then you run hermes mcp login again.
Will Hermes Agent change my store without asking?
StoreSEO tells the agent to preview, name any cost and wait for your yes before it applies content, optimizes images, changes settings, publishes llms.txt or agents.md, writes a description or deletes anything. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so limit the tools Hermes can see if you need a hard stop. Reads run straight away.
Which StoreSEO plan do I need?
Any active StoreSEO plan, including the free plan, can use the MCP server. Rank tracking is a Pro feature, Google reports need a paid plan with Google connected, and generated content spends AI Content Optimizer credit.
Can Hermes run StoreSEO checks on a schedule?
Yes. hermes cron create takes a schedule such as every monday 9am and a prompt, and --deliver sends the result to a chat target. Ask for reads and reports only, because a scheduled run cannot answer StoreSEO's confirmation, and use Hermes tool filters to keep write tools out of that agent.
How do I disconnect Hermes Agent from my store?
Remove the storeseo block from ~/.hermes/config.yaml and delete the cached token file under ~/.hermes/mcp-tokens. Also revoke the connection or token in StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit, where every connected app is listed.
