Run Your Shopify SEO from GitHub Copilot
GitHub Copilot is GitHub's AI coding assistant, and in VS Code its agent mode can call tools from MCP servers. Connected to StoreSEO, it reads your store's SEO scores, previews better meta and alt text, and applies what you approve from the chat panel next to your theme code.
- One entry in .vscode/mcp.json
- Or add it with MCP: Add Server
- All 44 tools fit under VS Code's per-request tool limit

-
You: Find my five lowest-scoring products and preview better meta for each.
- storeseo_start read-only
- storeseo_list_resources read-only
- storeseo_preview_resource_optimization preview
-
GitHub Copilot: StoreSEO drafted new meta for all five. Previews used AI credit; applying them is a separate step. Apply all five?
-
You: Yes, apply them.
- storeseo_apply_resource_optimization needs approval
-
GitHub Copilot: Applied. All five re-scored. Next I can look at where your theme renders the FAQ block, since schema depends on it.

How do I connect GitHub Copilot to StoreSEO?
- 1
Add StoreSEO to .vscode/mcp.json
Create or open .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace and paste this. VS Code uses a top-level servers key, not mcpServers, and a remote server needs type http.
JSON{ "servers": { "storeseo": { "type": "http", "url": "https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp" } } } - 2
Start the server and sign in
Run MCP: List Servers from the Command Palette, pick storeseo and start it. If it asks you to sign in, pick your Shopify store in the browser and approve access. Then open Copilot Chat in Agent mode, check the tools icon lists StoreSEO and ask this.
PromptUse StoreSEO to show me my store's SEO score breakdown.
- 3
Or add it from the Command Palette Optional
Run this command, choose a remote HTTP server, paste https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp and name it storeseo. VS Code asks where to save it: the workspace shares the entry with your team, your user configuration keeps it to yourself.
PromptMCP: Add Server
Sign-in
StoreSEO supports OAuth with dynamic client registration, so VS Code can sign you in through the browser: pick your Shopify store and approve access. No token has to sit in mcp.json.

What is GitHub Copilot?
GitHub Copilot is GitHub's AI coding assistant. In Visual Studio Code, Copilot Chat has an Agent mode that can plan multi-step work and call tools, including tools from Model Context Protocol servers.
VS Code reads MCP servers from a workspace file, .vscode/mcp.json, whose top-level key is servers, or from your user configuration, which you open with MCP: Open User Configuration. A remote server is an entry with type http and a url. You can also add one with the MCP: Add Server command, and manage servers with MCP: List Servers.
GitHub's documentation says MCP in Copilot needs VS Code 1.99 or later, and that on Copilot Business and Enterprise plans the MCP servers in Copilot policy must be enabled, while Free, Pro, Pro+ and Max users do not need an organization policy.
Why use GitHub Copilot with StoreSEO?
SEO next to your theme code
When a fix needs a theme change, such as where FAQs render or how a schema block is placed, the same chat can open the Liquid file beside the StoreSEO results.
Share the setup with a team
A .vscode/mcp.json committed to the repository gives everyone on the project the same StoreSEO connection, and each person signs in to their own account.
You see every tool call
Copilot shows the tools it calls, so you can tell a read from a preview from an apply, and stop a run that heads somewhere you did not ask for.
Good to know
- VS Code uses the servers key in .vscode/mcp.json. The mcpServers key belongs to the portable .mcp.json file at the project root, so copying a Cursor or Claude snippet unchanged will not work here.
- On Copilot Business and Enterprise plans an organization admin must enable the MCP servers in Copilot policy, otherwise the server will not be usable.
- A .vscode/mcp.json committed to the repository is shared with your team. Keep any token out of it and use input variables if you ever add one.
- Keep the apply, optimize, generate and delete tools on VS Code's confirmation prompt. StoreSEO asks for your yes in the chat, and the editor's tool confirmation is the hard stop.
What can you ask GitHub Copilot to do in StoreSEO?
Use StoreSEO to list every product scoring under 50 and preview new meta for the first ten.
Which product images have no alt text? Preview alt text for my top collection.
Check my schema settings and tell me which theme file renders the product JSON-LD.
Is my llms.txt live? Tell me what generating one will change before you run it.
Show Search Console queries from the last 28 days where we rank between 8 and 20.
GitHub Copilot guides by job
Each guide covers one StoreSEO job end to end in GitHub Copilot: setup, prompts, an example session, the rules and the limits.
Which way should you connect?
MCP server with OAuth
- Best for
- Claude, ChatGPT and any client that supports remote MCP sign-in
- Sign-in
- Pick your store in Shopify and approve once
- What you get
- All 44 tools, scoped to the store you approved
MCP server with an access token
- Best for
- Terminal agents and editors, or any client without OAuth
- Sign-in
- Generate a named token in Settings, AI Toolkit and send it as a Bearer header
- What you get
- The same 44 tools; revoke the token in the app to cut access
Shopify Sidekick
- Best for
- Merchants who stay inside Shopify admin
- Sign-in
- Nothing to add: StoreSEO is installed in your store
- What you get
- SEO answers and deep links to the fix page, not the MCP tools
What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.
Questions
How do I connect GitHub Copilot to StoreSEO?
Add a storeseo entry with type http and url https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp under the servers key in .vscode/mcp.json, or run MCP: Add Server. Start it from MCP: List Servers, sign in if prompted, then use Copilot Chat in Agent mode.
Do I need an API key for GitHub Copilot?
No. StoreSEO supports OAuth, so VS Code can sign you in through the browser and no token has to be written into mcp.json. A personal access token from Settings, AI Toolkit is the alternative for setups that cannot sign in.
Will Copilot change my store without asking?
StoreSEO tells the agent to preview first, say what a generation will cost, and wait for your yes before it applies content, optimizes images, changes settings, publishes a file or deletes anything. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so VS Code's own tool confirmation is the hard stop. Reads run straight away.
Which StoreSEO plan do I need?
Any active StoreSEO plan works, including the free plan. Keyword rank tracking is a Pro feature, Google reports need a paid plan with Google connected, and generated content spends AI Content Optimizer credit.
Is there a limit on how many MCP tools Copilot can use?
VS Code limits the number of tools in a single chat request. StoreSEO exposes 44 tools, which is well inside that limit. If you run many servers at once, switch off the tools you do not need in the tools picker.
Does it work on Copilot Business or Enterprise?
Yes, if your organization has enabled the MCP servers in Copilot policy. GitHub's documentation says that policy must be on for Business and Enterprise members, and that Free, Pro, Pro+ and Max users do not need one.
Where should I put the configuration, workspace or user?
Use .vscode/mcp.json to share the entry with the repository's team, or MCP: Open User Configuration to keep it to yourself across projects. Either way each person signs in with their own StoreSEO account.
How do I disconnect Copilot from my store?
Remove the storeseo entry from mcp.json or from MCP: List Servers, and revoke the connection in the StoreSEO app under Settings, AI Toolkit, where every connected app is listed.
