Run Your Shopify SEO from Claude Code
Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool that runs in your terminal and can call external tools through the Model Context Protocol. Connected to StoreSEO, it reads your store's SEO scores, previews optimized meta and images, and applies the changes you approve without opening the Shopify admin.
- One command: claude mcp add
- OAuth through your Shopify admin, or a token header
- Batch work across hundreds of products in one session

-
You: Find my five lowest-scoring products and preview better meta for each.
- storeseo_start read-only
- storeseo_list_resources read-only
- storeseo_preview_resource_optimization preview
-
Claude Code: StoreSEO drafted new meta for all five. The biggest jump is Linen Shirt, projected 41 to 78. Previews used AI credit; applying is free. Apply all five?
-
You: Apply them, but keep the current URL handles.
- storeseo_apply_resource_optimization needs approval
-
Claude Code: Applied without the handles. All five re-scored; the next fix is alt text on 14 images. Want me to do those?

How do I connect Claude Code to StoreSEO?
- 1
Add StoreSEO to Claude Code
Run this in any terminal. The user scope makes StoreSEO available in every project on your machine.
Terminalclaude mcp add --transport http --scope user storeseo https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp
- 2
Sign in to your store
Start Claude Code, run /mcp, choose storeseo and follow the browser window: pick your Shopify store and approve access.
Prompt/mcp
- 3
Or connect with an access token Optional
If you cannot use a browser sign-in, generate a token in StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit and add the server with the token as a header instead.
Terminalclaude mcp add --transport http --scope user storeseo https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp \ --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN"
Sign-in
Claude Code signs you in with OAuth: run /mcp, pick your Shopify store in the browser and approve. Claude Code stores the credentials it receives and refreshes them. If you prefer a token, generate one in StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit and add it with --header.

What is Claude Code?
Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. It runs in your terminal, and in IDE extensions and a desktop app, reads the project in the folder you start it in, and works through multi-step tasks by calling tools and showing each call as it happens.
It connects to remote MCP servers over HTTP. You add a server once with claude mcp add, and the user scope stores it in ~/.claude.json so it is available in every project. Remote servers that need a sign-in are authenticated from the /mcp menu, where you can also clear the credentials later.
That makes it a natural fit for developers and agencies who already work on a Shopify theme in the terminal. The same session that edits Liquid can audit the store's SEO, apply StoreSEO's optimized content and report the new scores.
Why use Claude Code with StoreSEO?
Work through the whole catalog
Ask for every product under a score and Claude Code pages through the listing, previews each one and gives you one combined summary to approve, instead of you opening products one by one.
Theme code and SEO in one place
When a fix needs a theme change, such as where FAQs render or how a schema block is placed, the same session can open the Liquid file next to the StoreSEO results.
You see every call
Claude Code prints each StoreSEO tool it runs, so you can tell a read from a preview from an apply, and stop a run that heads somewhere you did not ask for.
Good to know
- Without --scope user the server is added to the current project only, so it disappears when you start Claude Code in another folder.
- Claude Code asks before a tool runs unless you have allowed it. If you add an allow rule for the StoreSEO tools, the confirmation StoreSEO asks for in the chat becomes the only check, so keep apply, write and generate tools on ask.
- Claude Code warns when one tool result is larger than 10,000 tokens. Ask for smaller pages of products or images on a big catalog rather than raising the limit.
What can you ask Claude Code to do in StoreSEO?
Use StoreSEO to list every product scoring under 50 and preview new meta for the first ten.
Which product images have no alt text? Write it for the ones on my top collection, one image at a time.
Is my llms.txt up to date? If not, tell me what generating a new one will change before you run it.
Show me Search Console queries for the last 28 days where we rank between 8 and 20.
Turn on product schema and tell me how many products that fixes.
Claude Code guides by job
Each guide covers one StoreSEO job end to end in Claude Code: setup, prompts, an example session, the rules and the limits.
Which way should you connect?
MCP server with OAuth
- Best for
- Claude, ChatGPT and any client that supports remote MCP sign-in
- Sign-in
- Pick your store in Shopify and approve once
- What you get
- All 44 tools, scoped to the store you approved
MCP server with an access token
- Best for
- Terminal agents and editors, or any client without OAuth
- Sign-in
- Generate a named token in Settings, AI Toolkit and send it as a Bearer header
- What you get
- The same 44 tools; revoke the token in the app to cut access
Shopify Sidekick
- Best for
- Merchants who stay inside Shopify admin
- Sign-in
- Nothing to add: StoreSEO is installed in your store
- What you get
- SEO answers and deep links to the fix page, not the MCP tools
What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.
Questions
How do I connect Claude Code to StoreSEO?
Run claude mcp add --transport http --scope user storeseo https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp, start Claude Code, run /mcp and sign in. The browser asks you to pick your Shopify store and approve access, and then Claude Code can call the StoreSEO tools.
Do I need a StoreSEO API key for Claude Code?
No. Claude Code signs in with OAuth and keeps the credentials it receives. A personal access token from StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit is the alternative, added with the --header option.
Where does Claude Code store the StoreSEO server?
With --scope user it is stored in ~/.claude.json and available in every project on your machine. Without that option it is added to the current project only.
Will Claude Code change my products without asking?
StoreSEO tells Claude Code to preview first and wait for your yes before it applies content, optimizes images, publishes a file or deletes anything, and Claude Code also asks before running a tool unless you have allowed it. Reads such as scores and reports run straight away. Keep the write tools on ask if you want both checks.
Can Claude Code optimize my whole catalog?
Yes, in batches. It lists products by score, previews several at once and asks you to approve them together. Each preview spends AI credit, so start with the products that need it most.
Which StoreSEO plan does Claude Code need?
Any active StoreSEO plan, including the free plan, can use the MCP server. Rank tracking is a Pro feature, Google reports need a paid plan with Google connected, and generated content spends AI credit.
How do I disconnect Claude Code from my store?
Run claude mcp remove storeseo, or clear the authentication in the /mcp menu. You can also revoke the connection in StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit, where every connected app is listed.
