Run Your Shopify SEO from Paperclip
Paperclip is an open-source, self-hosted platform that manages teams of AI agents such as Claude Code, with an org chart, budgets, approvals and heartbeat schedules. Paperclip does not call tools itself, so you give StoreSEO to an agent it runs, and that agent audits your Shopify store's SEO as a Paperclip task.
- Wired through the MCP config of the agent Paperclip runs
- Token header for unattended runs, OAuth once for browser sign-in
- Scheduled routines that report on your store and change nothing

Or connect with an access token(optional)
If the host has no browser, generate a token in StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit and add the server with the token as a header instead of signing in. Keep the token in a Paperclip secret rather than in a file you commit.

Or connect it as a Paperclip connector(optional)
On the Connectors page choose Connect your own MCP server and paste the URL. Paperclip walks you through the sign-in and lists StoreSEO's tools so you can set each one to Allowed, Ask first or Off. It shows as an Unverified server, which describes Paperclip's review, not the connection.

What is Paperclip?
Paperclip is an open-source, MIT-licensed platform for managing teams of AI agents at work. You define a goal, hire agents such as Claude Code, Codex or Hermes into an org chart, set budgets and approvals, and follow every task and tool call from one dashboard. It is self-hosted, needs no Paperclip account and starts with npx paperclipai onboard.
Paperclip orchestrates agents rather than being one. An adapter launches the runtime that does the work, and that runtime is what speaks MCP. For the Claude Code adapter that means the server is added with claude mcp add on the host, and Paperclip's documentation says there is no separate paperclipai mcp add. Paperclip also has a Connectors page where you can attach your own MCP server by URL and set each action to Allowed, Ask first or Off.
Agents wake on a schedule, on assignment or on demand. Timer heartbeats are off by default, and recurring work belongs in routines, which fire on a cron schedule or a webhook and hand a task to an agent. That makes Paperclip a fit for teams that want an SEO agent working on a rhythm, with a human reading what it did.
Why use Paperclip with StoreSEO?
SEO work as tickets
Every instruction, tool call and answer sits on a Paperclip ticket with a trace, so you can read what the agent asked StoreSEO and what came back before you approve a change.
A rhythm, not a one-off
A routine can start a weekly store review for an agent without you opening a chat. Reads such as scores and reports are a safe thing to schedule, and you decide what to act on.
Budgets around the agent
Paperclip gives each agent a monthly budget and pauses it at the limit. StoreSEO's own AI credit still applies to generated content, so the two limits sit side by side.
Good to know
- The Claude Code adapter runs headless with dangerouslySkipPermissions on by default, which lets the agent use connected MCP tools without asking. Set it to false so a StoreSEO tool that needs approval does not run unattended, or use the Paperclip connector and keep write tools on Ask first.
- Paperclip's action permissions and review queue apply to connectors only. A server added with claude mcp add on the adapter does not pass through them, so the agent's own settings and StoreSEO's confirmation are your checks there.
- Remote sign-in cannot finish headless. Complete OAuth once in an interactive claude session as the same OS user that runs the heartbeat, or use a token. A 401 after some hours means the refresh failed and you should sign in again.
- User scope in ~/.claude.json is shared by every agent that OS user runs, so every Claude Code agent on that host sees StoreSEO. Use a dedicated OS user or a project scope if only one agent should.
What can you ask Paperclip to do in StoreSEO?
Tap a prompt to copy it, then paste it into Paperclip.
Schedule a report-only store review
Paperclip routines fire on a cron schedule or a webhook, create a task and wake the agent you assign. Keep any scheduled StoreSEO run to reads and a written report: nobody is there to say yes, and the Claude Code adapter does not stop to ask by default. Leave applying, generating and publishing for a task you start and approve yourself.
Weekly store review. Use StoreSEO to read my SEO scores, list the five lowest-scoring products and any Search Console drops, and post the findings on this task. Read only: do not preview, apply, generate or publish anything.
One connection gives Paperclip your whole store
Connect Paperclip once. It can then read and improve every part of your store below, through the same 44 StoreSEO tools and the same approval rules.
Paperclip guides by job

Which way should you connect?
MCP server with OAuth
- Best for
- Claude, ChatGPT and any client that supports remote MCP sign-in
- Sign-in
- Pick your store in Shopify and approve once
- What you get
- All 44 tools, scoped to the store you approved
MCP server with an access token
- Best for
- Terminal agents and editors, or any client without OAuth
- Sign-in
- Generate a named token in Settings, AI Toolkit and send it as a Bearer header
- What you get
- The same 44 tools; revoke the token in the app to cut access
Shopify Sidekick
- Best for
- Merchants who stay inside Shopify admin
- Sign-in
- Nothing to add: StoreSEO is installed in your store
- What you get
- SEO answers and deep links to the fix page, not the MCP tools
What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.
Questions
How do I connect Paperclip to StoreSEO?
Paperclip does not call MCP tools itself, so you add StoreSEO to an agent it runs. For a Claude Code agent, run claude mcp add --transport http --scope user storeseo https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp as the OS user that runs the heartbeat, then sign in once with /mcp in an interactive claude session. You can also attach the URL on Paperclip's Connectors page with Connect your own MCP server.
Do I need a StoreSEO API key for Paperclip?
Not necessarily. OAuth works if you complete the sign-in once in an interactive session as the same user the agent runs as. Because Paperclip runs agents without a browser, many people prefer a personal access token from StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit, sent as an Authorization Bearer header.
Does Paperclip itself have a StoreSEO connector?
No. StoreSEO is not in Paperclip's connector catalog. You either configure the MCP server on the agent's runtime or paste the StoreSEO URL into Paperclip's Connect your own MCP server option, where it appears as an unverified server.
Will a Paperclip agent change my store without asking?
StoreSEO tells the agent to preview, say what it will cost and wait for your yes before it applies content, optimizes images, changes settings, publishes a file or deletes anything. That is an instruction, not a lock. Paperclip's Claude Code adapter runs headless and skips permission prompts by default, so set dangerouslySkipPermissions to false or keep write actions on Ask first in a Paperclip connector, and keep scheduled runs read-only.
Can Paperclip run StoreSEO checks on a schedule?
Yes. Paperclip routines fire on a cron schedule or a webhook and give a task to an agent. Make the routine's instructions read-only, such as scores and Search Console reports, and have the agent post findings on the task for you to review.
Which StoreSEO plan does Paperclip need?
Any active StoreSEO plan, including the free plan, can use the MCP server. Rank tracking is a Pro feature, Google reports need a paid plan with Google connected, and generated content spends AI credit. Paperclip itself is open source and self-hosted.
Which Paperclip agents can use StoreSEO?
Paperclip documents MCP paths for its Claude Code adapter and its Hermes adapter. Other adapters inherit whatever MCP support their own tool has, but Paperclip does not document that yet, so check that agent's own MCP setup first.
How do I disconnect Paperclip from my store?
Run claude mcp remove storeseo as the OS user the agent runs as, or delete the connector on Paperclip's Connectors page. Then revoke the connection in StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit, where every connected app and token is listed.
