Track keyword rankings with Paperclip

Tracking keyword rankings from Paperclip means giving an agent a recurring task to read your StoreSEO Google positions and competitor movement, while adding or deleting keywords stays in a task you start and approve.

Set up Paperclip for StoreSEO

Skip this if Paperclip is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the Paperclip page.

  1. 1

Add StoreSEO to the agent Paperclip runs

Run this on the machine that hosts the agent, as the same OS user the Paperclip heartbeat runs as, from the agent's working directory. It is the claude_local adapter path, and user scope makes StoreSEO available to every Claude Code agent that user runs.

    terminal
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user storeseo https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp
  2. 2

Sign in once, then let Paperclip run headless

Start claude interactively as that same user, run /mcp, choose storeseo and finish the browser sign-in: pick your Shopify store and approve. Claude Code keeps the credentials, so later Paperclip runs need no browser. Check with claude mcp get storeseo.

How does this work in Paperclip?

Rank tracking is the job most natural to put on a rhythm. A Paperclip routine fires on a cron schedule, creates a task and wakes the agent, which calls storeseo_list_keywords for the latest Google position, change and competitor positions, then storeseo_get_keyword_history for any keyword that moved. It posts a short note: what rose, what dropped out of the top ten, where tracked competitors sit. Because each run is a task with a trace, a month of them gives you a log on the ticket board you can compare week to week. Rank and competitor tracking are Pro plan tools, so on another plan the agent should say so. Ask it to keep the report to the keywords that moved, so the comment stays short enough to read.

Adding keywords is a write that touches limits. storeseo_add_keywords needs the exact country and language names from storeseo_list_rank_locations and storeseo_list_rank_languages, counts against your plan's keyword limit and queues a background check, so positions appear on a later run, not in the same reply. Competitors are capped at five and cannot be edited, only deleted and re-added. Deleting a keyword with storeseo_delete_keyword erases its whole history for good.

Keyword clusters through storeseo_generate_keyword_cluster spend AI credit, need a focus keyword set in the app and run for a couple of minutes, so they belong in a supervised task as well. The agent then polls storeseo_get_keyword_cluster until the background job is done and posts the related keywords with their search volume and difficulty on the ticket, which is the point at which you decide what a product page should target next.

  2. storeseo_list_rank_locations read-only
  3. storeseo_list_rank_languages read-only
  4. Paperclip: I found the exact country and language names the tracker accepts. Adding the keyword uses one slot of your plan's keyword limit and queues a check, so the position shows up on a later run. Add it?

  5. You: Yes, add it.

  6. storeseo_add_keywords needs approval
  7. Paperclip: Added and queued. I will report its first position when the weekly routine reads the list.

What StoreSEO does: keyword rank tracking

StoreSEO checks your Google rank for tracked keywords by country, language and device, records the history and compares competitor domains. Keyword clusters group related keywords around a product's focus keyword with search volume and difficulty.

Requires: Rank and competitor tracking are Pro plan tools. Keyword clusters spend AI Content Optimizer credit.

  1. 1

    Pick the market

The agent looks up the exact country and language names the tracker accepts, because new keywords must use them verbatim.

  2. 2

    Add keywords

After your yes it adds keywords with a country, language and device. Checks run in the background, so positions appear later.

  3. 3

    Read ranks and history

It lists your keywords with the latest Google position, change, SERP features and competitor positions, and reads the dated history for any keyword.

  4. 4

    Compare competitors

Up to five competitor domains are tracked alongside your keywords. To change one, it is deleted and the new domain added.

  5. 5

    Build a cluster

For a product with a focus keyword, StoreSEO generates a cluster of related keywords in the background; the agent states the estimated credit first and polls until it is ready.

Rules Paperclip follows

  • On a plan without rank tracking, the agent explains the upgrade instead of calling the rank tools.
  • Country and language names come from the lookup tools, never typed from memory.
  • Deleting a keyword or competitor erases its history for good, so the agent confirms each one.
  • A cluster needs a focus keyword set in the StoreSEO app; the agent states the estimated credit and waits for your yes.

In Paperclip

storeseo_delete_keyword and storeseo_delete_competitor erase history permanently, and the Claude Code adapter's default of skipping permission prompts means an unattended routine could call them. Word every recurring rank task as read only and name the delete tools as off limits. If you attach StoreSEO as a Paperclip connector instead, set the delete and add actions to Ask first or Off, since the connector classifies each action.

What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.

Questions

Does a Paperclip rank report need a Pro StoreSEO plan?

Yes for the rank and competitor tools, which are Pro plan features. On another plan the agent should explain that instead of calling them, and Search Console reports from the Google reports job can still give you positions.

Why is my new keyword missing from the report?

Rank checks run in the background. Adding a keyword queues the first check, so its position appears in the list on a later run, usually the next weekly task, rather than in the run that added it.

Which plan do I need for keyword tracking through an agent?

Rank tracking and competitor tracking are Pro plan tools. On other plans the agent should explain that instead of calling them. Keyword clusters work on plans with AI Content Optimizer credit.

Does StoreSEO track rankings in AI search engines?

No. The rank tracker checks Google results by country, language and device. AI visibility is handled by the GEO score, llms.txt and agents.md jobs instead.

Why are new keywords pending?

Rank checks run in the background. Adding a keyword queues the first check, and its position appears in the keyword list once that check completes.

What is a keyword cluster?

A group of related keywords built around a product's focus keyword, sorted by search volume and scored for relevance and difficulty. It shows which wider terms the product page can target.
