Track keyword rankings with Windsurf

Tracking keyword rankings with Windsurf means asking the Cascade agent in your editor to add keywords to StoreSEO's Google rank tracker, read their latest positions and history, and compare them with up to five competitor domains while your Shopify theme stays open beside it.

Set up Windsurf for StoreSEO

Skip this if Windsurf is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the Windsurf page.

  1. 1

    Add StoreSEO to mcp_config.json

    In the Cascade panel, open the ... menu and click the Open MCP config file icon in the MCPs section. Add the entry under mcpServers and save. Remote servers use serverUrl.

    JSON
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "storeseo": {
          "serverUrl": "https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp"
        }
      }
    }
  2. 2

    Sign in to your store

    Windsurf supports OAuth for remote servers. When it asks you to sign in to storeseo, a browser window opens: pick your Shopify store and approve access. Then ask this to confirm the connection.

    Prompt
    Use StoreSEO to show me my store's SEO score breakdown.

How does this work in Windsurf?

You sit in the Cascade panel with a theme repository open, and you type something like track linen shirts and linen shirt for men in the United States on mobile. Cascade calls storeseo_start first, then storeseo_list_rank_locations and storeseo_list_rank_languages, because the tracker only accepts the exact country and language names from those lists. It shows you the proposed keyword rows, with country, language and device spelled out, and waits for your yes before it calls storeseo_add_keywords. The editor shows each tool call in the chat, so you can see which lookup produced which name.

Adding a keyword only queues the first Google check. Positions arrive in the background, so a keyword added a minute ago may show no rank yet, and Cascade should say so instead of guessing. Later you ask how the tracked keywords moved, and Cascade reads storeseo_list_keywords for the latest position, the change, SERP features and competitor positions, then storeseo_get_keyword_history for a dated trail on one keyword. Because the work happens in the editor, you can ask Cascade to put a keyword's history next to the product copy it is editing, or to write the movers into a notes file in the project.

Competitors work the same way. storeseo_list_competitors shows the domains you track, and storeseo_add_competitors takes new ones after your yes, up to five in total. Rank and competitor tracking are Pro plan tools, so on another plan Cascade should explain the upgrade instead of calling them. Everything here checks Google only; AI answer engines are not tracked by this job.

Windsurf + StoreSEO Illustrative session
  1. You: Track linen shirt and linen shirt for men in the United States on mobile.

  2. storeseo_start read-only
  3. storeseo_list_rank_locations read-only
  4. storeseo_list_rank_languages read-only
  5. Windsurf: StoreSEO accepts United States and English for that market. Shall I add linen shirt and linen shirt for men as mobile keywords on Google? Each one counts against your plan's keyword limit.

  6. You: Yes, add both.

  7. storeseo_add_keywords needs approval
  8. Windsurf: Both are queued. Positions show up in storeseo_list_keywords once the first checks finish; ask me again in a few minutes.

What StoreSEO does: keyword rank tracking

StoreSEO checks your Google rank for tracked keywords by country, language and device, records the history and compares competitor domains. Keyword clusters group related keywords around a product's focus keyword with search volume and difficulty.

Requires: Rank and competitor tracking are Pro plan tools. Keyword clusters spend AI Content Optimizer credit.

  1. 1

    Pick the market

    The agent looks up the exact country and language names the tracker accepts, because new keywords must use them verbatim.

  2. 2

    Add keywords

    After your yes it adds keywords with a country, language and device. Checks run in the background, so positions appear later.

  3. 3

    Read ranks and history

    It lists your keywords with the latest Google position, change, SERP features and competitor positions, and reads the dated history for any keyword.

  4. 4

    Compare competitors

    Up to five competitor domains are tracked alongside your keywords. To change one, it is deleted and the new domain added.

  5. 5

    Build a cluster

    For a product with a focus keyword, StoreSEO generates a cluster of related keywords in the background; the agent states the estimated credit first and polls until it is ready.

Rules Windsurf follows

  • On a plan without rank tracking, the agent explains the upgrade instead of calling the rank tools.
  • Country and language names come from the lookup tools, never typed from memory.
  • Deleting a keyword or competitor erases its history for good, so the agent confirms each one.
  • A cluster needs a focus keyword set in the StoreSEO app; the agent states the estimated credit and waits for your yes.

In Windsurf

Cascade can use at most 100 MCP tools at once across every server, and StoreSEO uses 44 of them, so a heavy MCP setup can leave no room for the rank tools. Check the MCPs section and disable what you do not need. Windsurf's MCP page also says its mcp_config.json applies to the legacy Cascade agent, while the Devin Local agent reads other files, so confirm which agent you are in. The page does not describe Cascade's tool approval, so treat a keyword delete, which erases that keyword's whole rank history, as something to read carefully before you say yes.

What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.

Questions

Why does Cascade say my new keyword has no position yet?

Adding a keyword with storeseo_add_keywords only queues the first Google check. The position appears in the keyword list when that background check completes, so ask Cascade to read the list again a little later.

Can Windsurf track keywords on a free StoreSEO plan?

The MCP server connects on any active plan, but the rank and competitor tools are Pro plan tools. On other plans Cascade should explain that instead of calling them.

Which plan do I need for keyword tracking through an agent?

Rank tracking and competitor tracking are Pro plan tools. On other plans the agent should explain that instead of calling them. Keyword clusters work on plans with AI Content Optimizer credit.

Does StoreSEO track rankings in AI search engines?

No. The rank tracker checks Google results by country, language and device. AI visibility is handled by the GEO score, llms.txt and agents.md jobs instead.

Why are new keywords pending?

Rank checks run in the background. Adding a keyword queues the first check, and its position appears in the keyword list once that check completes.

What is a keyword cluster?

A group of related keywords built around a product's focus keyword, sorted by search volume and scored for relevance and difficulty. It shows which wider terms the product page can target.
