Write SEO blog post drafts with Windsurf

Writing blog post drafts in Windsurf with StoreSEO means asking Cascade, from the editor you already work in, to choose a Shopify blog and have StoreSEO write a complete SEO post that lands as a draft article for you to review.

Set up Windsurf for StoreSEO

Skip this if Windsurf is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the Windsurf page.

  1. 1

    Add StoreSEO to mcp_config.json

    In the Cascade panel, open the ... menu and click the Open MCP config file icon in the MCPs section. Add the entry under mcpServers and save. Remote servers use serverUrl.

    JSON
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "storeseo": {
          "serverUrl": "https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp"
        }
      }
    }
  2. 2

    Sign in to your store

    Windsurf supports OAuth for remote servers. When it asks you to sign in to storeseo, a browser window opens: pick your Shopify store and approve access. Then ask this to confirm the connection.

    Prompt
    Use StoreSEO to show me my store's SEO score breakdown.

How does this work in Windsurf?

You are in Windsurf with the Cascade panel open and StoreSEO listed in your MCP servers. You type the brief the way you would hand it to a colleague: the topic, the keyword, roughly how long, and whether you want a featured image. Cascade calls storeseo_start first, because every StoreSEO tool needs the conversation id it returns, and then storeseo_list_blogs to find the blog the post will go into. That tool returns each blog's numeric id, title and article count, and only blogs already synced in the StoreSEO app appear, so an empty list sends you to the app rather than to another prompt.

Before it writes anything, Cascade should tell you what the post will cost. Writing a post spends AI Content Optimizer credit, and the amount grows with the word count and with a featured image, so StoreSEO tells the agent to name the cost and wait for your yes. Once you agree, Cascade calls storeseo_generate_blog_post with the blog id and your brief. The writing runs in the background for a few minutes, so Cascade then calls storeseo_get_blog_post_job on the returned job id and reports how many steps are complete until the job is completed, failed or cancelled. While it runs, the draft article already exists in Shopify but is not finished, and Cascade should not describe it as done.

The editor setting is a small advantage here. While the job runs you can keep working in the theme or the repository in another Cascade thread, and when the job completes you can ask Cascade to read the draft's SEO record with storeseo_get_resource_seo using resource type article. You can also ask it to save the brief and the keyword plan into a Markdown file in your project so the next post follows the same pattern. The article itself stays in Shopify as a draft; you open it in Shopify admin, edit it and publish it there.

Windsurf + StoreSEO Illustrative session
  1. You: Write a 1,200 word draft on how to care for linen shirts in my News blog, with a featured image.

  2. storeseo_start read-only
  3. storeseo_list_blogs read-only
  4. Windsurf: News is blog 1042 and holds 18 articles. A 1,200 word post with a featured image costs more AI credit than text alone, and it is saved as a draft only. Shall I start it?

  5. You: Yes, go ahead.

  6. storeseo_generate_blog_post needs approval
  7. storeseo_get_blog_post_job read-only
  8. Windsurf: The job is at step 3 of 5, so the draft is not finished yet. I will keep checking and tell you when it completes; you publish it from Shopify admin.

What to ask Windsurf

Prompt 1

Prompt 3

  • Write a draft post targeting best gifts for coffee lovers, with a featured image.
  • How far along is the blog post you started?
  • Check the SEO score of the draft you just wrote.
  • Draft three post ideas for my store and write the strongest one.

What StoreSEO does: blog post drafts

StoreSEO writes a full blog post with AI and saves it as a draft article in the Shopify blog you choose, optionally with a featured image. Nothing is published: you review and publish from Shopify admin.

Requires: Spends AI Content Optimizer credit; the cost grows with word count and a featured image. Blogs must be synced in the StoreSEO app.

  1. 1

    Pick the blog

    The agent lists your synced blogs, the sections posts go into, with their ids. An empty list means the blogs need syncing in the StoreSEO app first.

  2. 2

    Agree the brief and cost

    Topic, keyword, length and whether to add a featured image. The cost grows with length and the image, so the agent tells you and waits for your yes.

  3. 3

    Generate in the background

    Writing takes a few minutes. The agent polls the job and reports progress, and does not present the post as finished while it runs.

  4. 4

    Check the draft

    When the job completes, the agent can read the draft article's SEO record. You review and publish the post from Shopify admin.

Blog post drafts reference

Output A draft article in the chosen Shopify blog, never published live
Featured image Optional; uploaded with the draft and adds to the cost
Run time A few minutes in the background
Insufficient credit The call fails before anything is queued or spent
Blogs Only blogs synced with StoreSEO are listed; syncing is done in the app
Failed runs The job reports the error and credits are settled automatically

Rules Windsurf follows

  • The agent states the expected credit use and waits for your yes before it starts a post.
  • Posts are saved as drafts only; publishing is done by you in Shopify admin.
  • While the job runs, the agent reports progress and never presents the draft as finished.

In Windsurf

Windsurf's MCP page says its configuration applies to the legacy Cascade agent, while the Devin Local agent, the default for new tabs, reads Devin CLI configuration files instead. If StoreSEO tools are missing when you ask for a blog draft, check which agent the tab is using. The page does not describe how Cascade approves MCP tool calls, so treat StoreSEO's cost confirmation as an instruction the agent follows and read the proposed call before you accept it. Cascade also caps tools at 100 in total across all enabled servers, and StoreSEO uses 44 of them.

What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.
