Set up Grok for StoreSEO

Skip this if Grok is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the Grok page.

  1. 1

    Add a custom connector

Open the connectors page on grok.com, choose New Connector and then Custom. Enter this as the MCP server URL and complete the authentication when it opens.

    URL
    https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp
  2. 2

Approve your store and check it

Pick your Shopify store in the browser and approve access. Then start a chat with the connector available and ask this to confirm the connection works.

    Prompt
Use StoreSEO to show me my store's SEO score breakdown.

How does this work in Grok?

You are in a Grok chat on grok.com with the StoreSEO custom connector added and your Shopify store approved through the browser sign-in. You say what you want: a post on a topic, the keyword to aim at, a length, and whether it needs a featured image. Grok calls storeseo_start, which returns the conversation id every other StoreSEO tool needs, and then storeseo_list_blogs to show the blogs it can write into. Each blog comes back with its numeric id, title and article count, and only blogs synced in the StoreSEO app are listed, so a store that has never synced its blogs gets an empty answer and a pointer to the app.

The cost conversation happens in the chat. Writing a post spends AI Content Optimizer credit, more for a longer post and more again for a featured image, and StoreSEO tells the agent to state the cost and wait for your yes. When you agree, Grok calls storeseo_generate_blog_post and then storeseo_get_blog_post_job with the job id. The job takes a few minutes, so you will usually see Grok report steps completed out of total rather than an article. Stay in the same chat while it runs, or come back to it and ask how far along the post is, and Grok will check the job again. When the status is completed you can have it read the draft's SEO record with storeseo_get_resource_seo using resource type article.

What Grok gives you is a conversation, not a file. The article itself is not pasted into the chat as the deliverable; it exists as a draft in your Shopify blog, where you open it in Shopify admin, edit it and publish it. If you want a second post, ask for a different keyword in the same chat and Grok reuses the blog id it already found.

Grok + StoreSEO Illustrative session
  1. You: Write a 1,000 word blog draft on how to choose running shoes, in my Journal blog.

  2. storeseo_start read-only
  3. storeseo_list_blogs read-only
  4. Grok: Journal is blog 2210 with 9 articles. The post spends AI credit based on its length, and it is saved as a draft that you publish yourself. Shall I write it?

  5. You: Yes, please.

  6. storeseo_generate_blog_post needs approval
  7. storeseo_get_blog_post_job read-only
  8. Grok: The job is running, 2 of 5 steps done, so there is no finished draft yet. Ask me again in a few minutes and I will check it.

  • Check the SEO score of the draft you just wrote.
  • Draft three post ideas for my store and write the strongest one.

What StoreSEO does: blog post drafts

StoreSEO writes a full blog post with AI and saves it as a draft article in the Shopify blog you choose, optionally with a featured image. Nothing is published: you review and publish from Shopify admin.

Requires: Spends AI Content Optimizer credit; the cost grows with word count and a featured image. Blogs must be synced in the StoreSEO app.

  1. 1

    Pick the blog

The agent lists your synced blogs, the sections posts go into, with their ids. An empty list means the blogs need syncing in the StoreSEO app first.

  2. 2

    Agree the brief and cost

Topic, keyword, length and whether to add a featured image. The cost grows with length and the image, so the agent tells you and waits for your yes.

  3. 3

    Generate in the background

Writing takes a few minutes. The agent polls the job and reports progress, and does not present the post as finished while it runs.

  4. 4

    Check the draft

When the job completes, the agent can read the draft article's SEO record. You review and publish the post from Shopify admin.

Blog post drafts reference

Output A draft article in the chosen Shopify blog, never published live
Featured image Optional; uploaded with the draft and adds to the cost
Run time A few minutes in the background
Insufficient credit The call fails before anything is queued or spent
Blogs Only blogs synced with StoreSEO are listed; syncing is done in the app
Failed runs The job reports the error and credits are settled automatically
06

Rules Grok follows

  • The agent states the expected credit use and waits for your yes before it starts a post.
  • Posts are saved as drafts only; publishing is done by you in Shopify admin.
  • While the job runs, the agent reports progress and never presents the draft as finished.

In Grok

xAI's connector documentation does not describe a per-tool approval setting, so the check on spending credit is StoreSEO's instruction to name the cost and wait for your yes, which Grok follows in the conversation. Read the cost it quotes before you reply. Because the job runs for a few minutes, keep the chat open or return to it and ask for a status check, and do not treat a started job as a finished post. On Grok Business and Enterprise a team admin has to provision the connector first, so a missing StoreSEO tool may mean the admin step has not happened.

What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.

Questions

Can Grok publish the blog post on my store?

No. StoreSEO saves what Grok generates as a draft article in your Shopify blog. You open it in Shopify admin, review it and publish it yourself.

What happens if I leave the Grok chat while the post is being written?

The writing runs in the background in StoreSEO. Return to the chat and ask for a status check, and Grok calls storeseo_get_blog_post_job again until the job is completed, failed or cancelled.

Will the agent publish a blog post on my store?

No. StoreSEO saves generated posts as drafts in the Shopify blog you choose. You review and publish them from Shopify admin.

How long does a blog post take?

A few minutes. The writing runs in the background and the agent checks the job until it is completed, failed or cancelled.

What does a blog post cost?

It spends AI Content Optimizer credit, and the amount grows with the word count and with a featured image. If you do not have enough credit the call fails before anything is spent.

Why does the agent say I have no blogs?

Only blogs synced with StoreSEO are listed. Sync your blogs in the StoreSEO app, then ask again.
