Write SEO blog post drafts with Hermes Agent

Writing blog post drafts with Hermes Agent and StoreSEO means telling Hermes in a chat session which post you want, and having it run StoreSEO's blog writer so the result is a draft article in your Shopify blog.

Set up Hermes Agent for StoreSEO

Skip this if Hermes Agent is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the Hermes Agent page.

  1. 1

    Add StoreSEO to config.yaml

Add this under mcp_servers in ~/.hermes/config.yaml. If the file already has an mcp_servers block, add only the storeseo entry. Then start a new Hermes session, or run /reload-mcp in the one that is open.

    YAML
    mcp_servers:
      storeseo:
        url: "https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp"
        auth: oauth
  2. 2

    Sign in to your store

On first connect Hermes prints an authorize URL and waits for the sign-in. Run this command to start it yourself or to re-authorize later. Pick your Shopify store and approve. Hermes caches the tokens in ~/.hermes/mcp-tokens/storeseo.json.

    Terminal
    hermes mcp login storeseo

How does this work in Hermes Agent?

Hermes Agent runs as a long-lived agent with a config file, a CLI and chat delivery targets, and you talk to it in a session. After adding StoreSEO under mcp_servers in config.yaml and signing in with hermes mcp login storeseo, you start a session, or run /reload-mcp in the one you have open, and describe the post: topic, keyword, length, featured image or not. Hermes calls storeseo_start first, since every StoreSEO tool needs the conversation id it returns, and then storeseo_list_blogs, which gives each synced blog's numeric id, title and article count. A blog that is not synced in the StoreSEO app will not be in the list, and no tool here can sync it.

Hermes then has to settle the cost with you. Writing a post spends AI Content Optimizer credit, which grows with the word count and with a featured image, and StoreSEO tells the agent to name the cost and wait for your yes before it calls storeseo_generate_blog_post. After your reply the writing runs for a few minutes in the background, and Hermes polls storeseo_get_blog_post_job with the job id, reporting progress and refusing to call the draft finished until the status is completed. A failed job returns an error message and the credit is settled automatically. On completion you can have it read the new draft with storeseo_get_resource_seo using resource type article.

Hermes also has hermes cron, and it is worth being clear about what belongs there. Writing a post is not a good scheduled task: a cron run has nobody to say yes, and every run would spend credit and add a draft. Use cron for reports, for instance a weekly count of articles per blog, and run the blog writer from a session where you are present. You publish the finished draft from Shopify admin.

Hermes Agent + StoreSEO Illustrative session
  1. You: Write a 1,500 word draft on how to build a capsule wardrobe in the Journal blog.

  2. storeseo_start read-only
  3. storeseo_list_blogs read-only
  4. Hermes Agent: Journal is blog 3318. A 1,500 word post uses more AI credit than a short one, and it is saved only as a draft. Shall I go ahead?

  5. You: Yes, go ahead.

  6. storeseo_generate_blog_post needs approval
  7. storeseo_get_blog_post_job read-only
  8. Hermes Agent: Step 1 of 5 is complete and the job is still running, so there is no finished draft yet. I will poll it again shortly.

What to ask Hermes Agent

Prompt 1
Use StoreSEO to list my blogs, then write a 1,500 word draft on how to build a capsule wardrobe in the Journal blog. State the credit cost and wait for my yes.
Prompt 2
Write a StoreSEO blog draft targeting best gifts for coffee lovers, without a featured image, and keep checking the job until it completes.
Prompt 3
Check the SEO record of the blog draft from the last job and summarize what is still weak.
  • List my blogs and write a 1,200 word draft on how to care for linen shirts in the News blog. Tell me the cost first.
  • Write a draft post targeting best gifts for coffee lovers, with a featured image.
  • How far along is the blog post you started?
  • Check the SEO score of the draft you just wrote.
  • Draft three post ideas for my store and write the strongest one.

What StoreSEO does: blog post drafts

StoreSEO writes a full blog post with AI and saves it as a draft article in the Shopify blog you choose, optionally with a featured image. Nothing is published: you review and publish from Shopify admin.

Requires: Spends AI Content Optimizer credit; the cost grows with word count and a featured image. Blogs must be synced in the StoreSEO app.

  1. 1

    Pick the blog

The agent lists your synced blogs, the sections posts go into, with their ids. An empty list means the blogs need syncing in the StoreSEO app first.

  2. 2

    Agree the brief and cost

Topic, keyword, length and whether to add a featured image. The cost grows with length and the image, so the agent tells you and waits for your yes.

  3. 3

    Generate in the background

Writing takes a few minutes. The agent polls the job and reports progress, and does not present the post as finished while it runs.

  4. 4

    Check the draft

When the job completes, the agent can read the draft article's SEO record. You review and publish the post from Shopify admin.

Blog post drafts reference

Output A draft article in the chosen Shopify blog, never published live
Featured image Optional; uploaded with the draft and adds to the cost
Run time A few minutes in the background
Insufficient credit The call fails before anything is queued or spent
Blogs Only blogs synced with StoreSEO are listed; syncing is done in the app
Failed runs The job reports the error and credits are settled automatically
06

Rules Hermes Agent follows

  • The agent states the expected credit use and waits for your yes before it starts a post.
  • Posts are saved as drafts only; publishing is done by you in Shopify admin.
  • While the job runs, the agent reports progress and never presents the draft as finished.

In Hermes Agent

Start a new Hermes session or run /reload-mcp after editing config.yaml, otherwise the open session does not see StoreSEO and the blog tools appear to be missing. A hermes cron job cannot wait for a yes, and storeseo_generate_blog_post spends credit and creates a draft on every run, so keep scheduled jobs to reads and run the writer from a session where you can answer the cost question. If you want a read-only agent for audits, Hermes' tools include list can expose only the list and get tools, but then it cannot write posts either, so use a separate configuration when you want drafts.

What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.

Questions

Can hermes cron write a blog post on a schedule?

It is not a good fit. A cron run cannot confirm the credit cost and would create a new draft each time. Use cron for read-only reports and run the blog writer in a session you are watching.

How do I know the Hermes blog draft is finished?

Hermes polls storeseo_get_blog_post_job until the status is completed, failed or cancelled. Until then the draft article exists in Shopify but is not finished, and Hermes should not describe it as done.

Will the agent publish a blog post on my store?

No. StoreSEO saves generated posts as drafts in the Shopify blog you choose. You review and publish them from Shopify admin.

How long does a blog post take?

A few minutes. The writing runs in the background and the agent checks the job until it is completed, failed or cancelled.

What does a blog post cost?

It spends AI Content Optimizer credit, and the amount grows with the word count and with a featured image. If you do not have enough credit the call fails before anything is spent.

Why does the agent say I have no blogs?

Only blogs synced with StoreSEO are listed. Sync your blogs in the StoreSEO app, then ask again.
