Set up Grok for StoreSEO
Skip this if Grok is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the Grok page.
- 1
Add a custom connector
Open the connectors page on grok.com, choose New Connector and then Custom. Enter this as the MCP server URL and complete the authentication when it opens.

- 2
Approve your store and check it
Pick your Shopify store in the browser and approve access. Then start a chat with the connector available and ask this to confirm the connection works.
PromptUse StoreSEO to show me my store's SEO score breakdown.
How does this work in Grok?
You are in a Grok conversation with the StoreSEO custom connector enabled, and you ask in plain words: which structured data is switched on in my store. Grok opens a StoreSEO session with storeseo_start, then calls storeseo_list_schema_types and reports back in the chat. You get each schema type, whether it is on and whether it is one of the configurable ones: product, review, product merchant, organization and local business. Every one of those calls is a read, so the answer arrives without you doing anything but asking.
Business details are where a chat is convenient, because you can simply type them. Tell Grok your business name, address, phone number and logo URL, and it calls storeseo_get_schema_settings for organization to fetch the current settings and the field template, then lays out the complete settings object in the conversation for you to check. Nothing is invented: if you leave out the opening hours for a local business, the agent should ask rather than fill a guess. When you say yes, it calls storeseo_update_schema_settings with the full object and the on status, and reports whether the call was accepted or refused.
Refusals are useful information in a chat. If the FAQ schema types are not in your plan, or you try to enable review schema before product schema is on, StoreSEO says which requirement failed and Grok relays it in plain words instead of retrying. You can then decide whether to turn product schema on first or leave FAQ schema alone. Because Grok has no editor or file system in this setup, any copy of the settings you want to keep is whatever you paste out of the chat.
-
You: What structured data does my store have switched on?
- storeseo_start read-only
- storeseo_list_schema_types read-only
-
Grok: Product schema is on. Organization and local business are off. Organization takes settings, so I can read its field template and fill it from your details. Want me to start?
-
You: Yes, read it.
- storeseo_get_schema_settings read-only
-
Grok: It needs name, logo and contact email. Send the complete settings with your details and switch organization schema on?
What to ask Grok
With StoreSEO, which JSON-LD schema types are on in my store, and which of them can I configure?
Show me my current organization schema settings and what fields are still empty. Do not change anything yet.
Here are my business name, logo URL and support email. Prepare the complete organization settings and ask me before you send them.
- Which JSON-LD schema types are enabled on my store?
- Set up organization schema with my business name, logo and contact email. Read the current settings first.
- Turn on product schema and review schema.
- Is local business schema configured? Show me what is missing.
- Enable FAQ schema for products if my plan includes it.
What StoreSEO does: structured data (json-ld)
StoreSEO adds JSON-LD schema to your storefront so search engines and AI assistants can read your products, business and FAQs as data. The agent lists every schema type, reads a type's settings and its field template, and sends back a complete settings object.
Requires: The FAQ schema types need the FAQ Schema feature in your plan.
- 1
List the schema types
The agent lists every type with whether it is on and whether it takes settings. Configurable types are product, review, sale dates, product merchant, organization and local business.
- 2
Read before writing
For a configurable type it reads the current settings and the field template, because an update replaces the whole settings object rather than merging into it.
- 3
Fill in your details
Business name, address, contact details and similar fields come from you. Organization and local business share the same business information, so changing one changes both.
- 4
Switch it on
After your yes the agent sends the complete settings with the status. Organization, local business and product merchant need complete settings to be enabled.
Structured data (JSON-LD) reference
| Configurable types | Product, review, sale dates, product merchant, organization, local business |
|---|---|
| Toggle-only types | Every other type, including the four FAQ types |
| Update behaviour | Settings replace the stored object; read first, then send the full object |
| Dependencies | Review, sale dates and product merchant need product schema on; disabling product also disables product merchant |
| Shared data | Organization and local business share basic business information |
| FAQ types | Product, collection, article and page FAQ need the FAQ Schema feature in your plan |
| Sale dates | Also needs a discount permission that only the app's own Sale Dates toggle can request |
Rules Grok follows
- The agent reads the current settings before every settings update, because the update replaces them wholesale.
- Business details come from you; the agent does not invent an address, phone number or opening hours.
- Turning a schema type on or off changes your live storefront markup, so the agent confirms the change first.
- When a type is refused for a missing plan feature or dependency, the agent says which one rather than retrying.
In Grok
xAI's connector documentation does not describe a per-tool approval setting, so in a Grok chat the main check on a schema change is the confirmation StoreSEO instructs the agent to ask for. Read the settings object Grok proposes before you say yes, because the update replaces the stored settings and changes the markup on your live storefront. On Grok Business and Enterprise a team admin has to provision the connector in the cloud console before you can use it, and the connector must reach the StoreSEO server over the public internet. This page covers the chat connector at grok.com, not xAI's terminal agent, which is configured separately.
What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.
Questions
Can Grok turn on organization schema from a chat?
Yes, through the StoreSEO connector. It reads the current settings and field template, shows you the complete object and sends it with storeseo_update_schema_settings after you agree.
What happens if Grok asks to enable a schema type my plan does not include?
StoreSEO rejects the call and names the missing feature or dependency, such as the FAQ Schema feature or product schema being off. Grok should report that to you instead of trying again.
What schema types can StoreSEO add to my store?
StoreSEO manages product, review, sale dates, product merchant, organization and local business schema with settings, plus toggle-only types such as the FAQ types for products, collections, articles and pages.
Why does the agent read my schema settings before changing them?
A settings update replaces the whole stored object instead of merging. Reading first and sending back the complete object is the only way to change one field without wiping the others.
Why was review schema refused?
Review, sale dates and product merchant schema depend on product schema. Turn product schema on first, then enable the dependent type.
Do I need a particular plan for FAQ schema?
Yes. The four FAQ schema types need the FAQ Schema feature in your StoreSEO plan. Without it, any change to them is refused with a message saying the feature is not in your plan.
