Set up structured data with ChatGPT
Configuring structured data with ChatGPT means using the StoreSEO app you added in developer mode to list your store's JSON-LD schema types, read a type's settings and send them back complete, with ChatGPT's own confirmation step before the write.

Set up ChatGPT for StoreSEO
Skip this if ChatGPT is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the ChatGPT page.
- 1
Turn on developer mode
In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings, then Security and login, and turn on Developer mode. If your menu shows Apps and Connectors with Advanced settings instead, the same switch lives there. OpenAI lists developer mode for Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web.

Create the app with the StoreSEO MCP URL
Open Plugins and select the plus button to create a developer-mode app. Name it StoreSEO, paste this as the MCP server URL and choose OAuth. Sign in when the browser asks: pick your Shopify store and approve access.

Use it in a chat
The app appears in the composer's Developer mode tool during conversations. Select StoreSEO there, then ask this to confirm the connection works.
PromptUsing the StoreSEO app, show me my store's SEO score breakdown.
How does this work in ChatGPT?
You open a chat, pick the StoreSEO app from the developer-mode tool menu in the composer, and ask which schema types are enabled. ChatGPT calls storeseo_start and storeseo_list_schema_types and shows each call in the conversation. Reads such as these are what ChatGPT's developer mode treats as read-only, so they typically run without a prompt, and you get a plain list of types with their on or off state and which ones take settings.
To set up local business schema, ChatGPT reads the type with storeseo_get_schema_settings, takes the field template from the result and asks you for the missing pieces: business name, address, phone number, opening hours. Organization and local business share the same basic information, so ChatGPT should tell you that filling in one fills in both, which is easy to miss if you only asked for one. When you agree, it calls storeseo_update_schema_settings with the whole settings object and the status you want.
That update is a write action, so this is where ChatGPT shows its own confirmation. OpenAI's documentation says write actions need approval by default and that you can inspect the payload before they run. Do that: the payload is the complete settings object, and checking it is how you catch a blank field that would overwrite something you set before. Treat the option to remember approval for the rest of the conversation with care, because later calls in the same chat, such as switching a type off, would then go through without a prompt.

You: Check my structured data. Is local business schema set up?
- storeseo_start read-only
- storeseo_list_schema_types read-only
- storeseo_get_schema_settings read-only
-
ChatGPT: Local business schema is off and has no address or phone number. It shares business information with organization schema. If you give me the address and phone, shall I save it and switch it on?

You: Yes. 14 Mill Lane, Leeds, phone 0113 555 0142.

What to ask ChatGPT
In StoreSEO, which JSON-LD schema types are enabled on my store, and which ones can be configured?
Read my local business schema settings, tell me which fields are empty and ask me for them before changing anything.
Enable product schema in StoreSEO. If review schema is refused, tell me why instead of retrying.
- Which JSON-LD schema types are enabled on my store?
- Set up organization schema with my business name, logo and contact email. Read the current settings first.
- Turn on product schema and review schema.
- Is local business schema configured? Show me what is missing.
- Enable FAQ schema for products if my plan includes it.
What StoreSEO does: structured data (json-ld)
StoreSEO adds JSON-LD schema to your storefront so search engines and AI assistants can read your products, business and FAQs as data. The agent lists every schema type, reads a type's settings and its field template, and sends back a complete settings object.
Requires: The FAQ schema types need the FAQ Schema feature in your plan.
- 1
List the schema types
The agent lists every type with whether it is on and whether it takes settings. Configurable types are product, review, sale dates, product merchant, organization and local business.
- 2
Read before writing
For a configurable type it reads the current settings and the field template, because an update replaces the whole settings object rather than merging into it.
- 3
Fill in your details
Business name, address, contact details and similar fields come from you. Organization and local business share the same business information, so changing one changes both.
- 4
Switch it on
After your yes the agent sends the complete settings with the status. Organization, local business and product merchant need complete settings to be enabled.
Structured data (JSON-LD) reference
| Configurable types | Product, review, sale dates, product merchant, organization, local business |
|---|---|
| Toggle-only types | Every other type, including the four FAQ types |
| Update behaviour | Settings replace the stored object; read first, then send the full object |
| Dependencies | Review, sale dates and product merchant need product schema on; disabling product also disables product merchant |
| Shared data | Organization and local business share basic business information |
| FAQ types | Product, collection, article and page FAQ need the FAQ Schema feature in your plan |
| Sale dates | Also needs a discount permission that only the app's own Sale Dates toggle can request |
Rules ChatGPT follows
- The agent reads the current settings before every settings update, because the update replaces them wholesale.
- Business details come from you; the agent does not invent an address, phone number or opening hours.
- Turning a schema type on or off changes your live storefront markup, so the agent confirms the change first.
- When a type is refused for a missing plan feature or dependency, the agent says which one rather than retrying.
In ChatGPT
Whether ChatGPT can run storeseo_update_schema_settings depends on your plan. OpenAI's help center, as we read it, gives Pro accounts read access only and puts write actions in beta on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, so on a plan without write actions you can still list types and read settings but must save them from the StoreSEO app or another agent. Where writes are available, read the payload in the confirmation before you approve it.
What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.
Questions
Can ChatGPT read my StoreSEO schema settings if it cannot write them?
Yes. storeseo_list_schema_types and storeseo_get_schema_settings are read-only tools, so a ChatGPT plan with read access can still show you which types are on and what each one currently holds.
What should I check in ChatGPT's confirmation before a schema update?
Check that the settings object is complete, with your earlier values still present and the new business details filled in, and that the status matches what you asked for. The update replaces the stored object wholesale.
What schema types can StoreSEO add to my store?
StoreSEO manages product, review, sale dates, product merchant, organization and local business schema with settings, plus toggle-only types such as the FAQ types for products, collections, articles and pages.
Why does the agent read my schema settings before changing them?
A settings update replaces the whole stored object instead of merging. Reading first and sending back the complete object is the only way to change one field without wiping the others.
Why was review schema refused?
Review, sale dates and product merchant schema depend on product schema. Turn product schema on first, then enable the dependent type.
Do I need a particular plan for FAQ schema?
Yes. The four FAQ schema types need the FAQ Schema feature in your StoreSEO plan. Without it, any change to them is refused with a message saying the feature is not in your plan.
