How do I connect Zed to StoreSEO?
- 1
Add StoreSEO as a remote server
Open Settings, then AI, then MCP Servers and add a remote server, or add this to settings.json yourself. Leave out headers so Zed can sign you in.
JSON{ "context_servers": { "storeseo": { "url": "https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp" } } } - 2
Sign in and check the dot
Because the entry has no Authorization header, Zed prompts you to authenticate. Pick your Shopify store and approve in the browser. In Settings, AI, MCP Servers a green dot next to storeseo means the server is active. Then ask this in the Agent Panel.
PromptUse StoreSEO to show me my store's SEO score breakdown.

Or connect with an access token Optional
If you cannot use the browser sign-in, generate a token in StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit and add it as a header. Keep settings.json out of a public repository when it holds a token.
JSON{ "context_servers": { "storeseo": { "url": "https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp", "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_TOKEN" } } } }
Sign-in
With no Authorization header in the entry, Zed prompts you to sign in through the standard MCP OAuth flow: pick your Shopify store and approve. To use a StoreSEO personal access token instead, add it as a Bearer header in the same entry.

What is Zed?
Zed is a code editor from Zed Industries. It has a built-in Agent Panel where an AI agent reads your project and works through tasks, and it supports MCP tools and prompts through context servers.
A remote MCP server is added in settings.json under context_servers with a url. If the entry has no Authorization header, Zed prompts you to sign in through the standard MCP OAuth flow. Settings, AI, MCP Servers shows each server with a status dot, and green means the server is active.
Zed has its own tool-approval setting, agent.tool_permissions.default, which is confirm by default: the agent panel asks before it runs a tool action. You can set a different value overall, or per tool with keys of the form mcp:<server>:<tool_name>.
Why use Zed with StoreSEO?
Theme code and SEO in one panel
When a fix needs a Liquid change, such as where FAQs or a schema block render, the same Agent Panel can open the theme file next to the StoreSEO results.
A client-side hard stop by default
Zed asks before running a tool action unless you change agent.tool_permissions. That sits on top of the confirmation StoreSEO tells the agent to ask for, so a write has two checks.
One entry, no tokens in the file
With OAuth the entry is just the URL. Zed signs you in through your Shopify admin, so no secret sits in settings.json unless you choose the token route.
Good to know
- Zed's default is to ask before every tool action, reads included, so a catalog audit means several prompts. Allow only the read tools with per-tool keys such as mcp:storeseo:storeseo_list_resources and leave the write tools on confirm.
- Setting agent.tool_permissions.default to allow removes Zed's check. Then the confirmation StoreSEO asks the agent for in the chat is the only one, so use allow sparingly.
- A token in settings.json is a secret. Revoke it in StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit if the file is exposed.
What can you ask Zed to do in StoreSEO?
Use StoreSEO to list every product scoring under 50 and preview new meta for the first five.
Which product images have no alt text? Show me the list before you change anything.
Is product schema turned on for my store? If not, tell me what enabling it changes.
Is my llms.txt up to date? If not, say what generating a new one will publish and cost.
Open the theme file that renders my FAQ section and tell me whether StoreSEO's FAQ output will show there.
Zed guides by job
Each guide covers one StoreSEO job end to end in Zed: setup, prompts, an example session, the rules and the limits.
Which way should you connect?
MCP server with OAuth
- Best for
- Claude, ChatGPT and any client that supports remote MCP sign-in
- Sign-in
- Pick your store in Shopify and approve once
- What you get
- All 44 tools, scoped to the store you approved
MCP server with an access token
- Best for
- Terminal agents and editors, or any client without OAuth
- Sign-in
- Generate a named token in Settings, AI Toolkit and send it as a Bearer header
- What you get
- The same 44 tools; revoke the token in the app to cut access
Shopify Sidekick
- Best for
- Merchants who stay inside Shopify admin
- Sign-in
- Nothing to add: StoreSEO is installed in your store
- What you get
- SEO answers and deep links to the fix page, not the MCP tools
What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.
Questions
How do I connect Zed to StoreSEO?
Add a context_servers entry named storeseo with the url https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp to settings.json, or add a remote server under Settings, AI, MCP Servers. With no Authorization header, Zed prompts you to sign in: pick your Shopify store and approve.
Do I need a StoreSEO API key for Zed?
No. Zed signs in with the standard MCP OAuth flow when the entry has no Authorization header. A personal access token from StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit is the alternative, added as a Bearer value in a headers object.
How do I know the StoreSEO server is connected in Zed?
Open Settings, AI, MCP Servers. A green dot next to storeseo means the server is active. Then ask the Agent Panel for your store's SEO score breakdown to see a real answer.
Will Zed change my store without asking?
StoreSEO tells the agent to preview, name any cost and wait for your yes before it applies content, optimizes images, changes settings, publishes llms.txt or agents.md, writes a description or deletes anything. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server. Zed's own agent.tool_permissions setting is the hard stop: it defaults to confirm, which prompts before every tool call, reads included.
Which StoreSEO plan do I need?
Any active StoreSEO plan, including the free plan, can use the MCP server. Rank tracking is a Pro feature, Google reports need a paid plan with Google connected, and generated content spends AI Content Optimizer credit.
Can I stop Zed asking for every read?
Yes. Zed supports per-tool permission keys in the form mcp:server:tool, so you can allow StoreSEO's read tools and leave the write tools on confirm. Check Zed's MCP documentation for the exact settings shape in your version.
How do I disconnect Zed from my store?
Remove the storeseo entry from context_servers in settings.json or remove the server in Settings, AI, MCP Servers. You can also revoke the connection in StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit, where every connected app is listed.
