How to Connect StoreSEO MCP to Zed

Zed is a code editor from Zed Industries. It has a built-in Agent Panel where an AI agent reads your project and works through tasks, and it supports MCP tools and prompts through context servers.

This guide connects Zed to the StoreSEO MCP server at https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp. Once connected, Zed can read your Shopify store’s SEO scores and settings and, when you agree, apply optimized meta, alt text, schema and other SEO changes. For what to ask once you are set up, see StoreSEO for Zed.

Before You Start

  • Server URL: https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp
  • Sign-in: With no Authorization header in the entry, Zed prompts you to sign in through the standard MCP OAuth flow: pick your Shopify store and approve. To use a StoreSEO personal access token instead, add it as a Bearer header in the same entry.
  • Plan: The MCP server works on any active StoreSEO plan, including the free plan. A store with no active plan gets a message with a link to choose one in the app.
  • Access token (if you need one): create it in the StoreSEO app under Settings, AI Toolkit. Treat it like a password.

Connect StoreSEO to Zed

Step 1: Add StoreSEO as a remote server

Open Settings, then AI, then MCP Servers and add a remote server, or add this to settings.json yourself. Leave out headers so Zed can sign you in.

{
  "context_servers": {
    "storeseo": {
      "url": "https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Step 2: Sign in and check the dot

Because the entry has no Authorization header, Zed prompts you to authenticate. Pick your Shopify store and approve in the browser. In Settings, AI, MCP Servers a green dot next to storeseo means the server is active. Then ask this in the Agent Panel.

Other Ways to Connect

Option: Connect with an access token

If you cannot use the browser sign-in, generate a token in StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit and add it as a header. Keep settings.json out of a public repository when it holds a token.

{
  "context_servers": {
    "storeseo": {
      "url": "https://mcp.storeseo.com/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_TOKEN" }
    }
  }
}

Check the Connection

Start a new session and send this prompt. Zed should call StoreSEO and answer with your store’s real SEO score.

What to Ask Zed

  • Use StoreSEO to list every product scoring under 50 and preview new meta for the first five.
  • Which product images have no alt text? Show me the list before you change anything.
  • Is product schema turned on for my store? If not, tell me what enabling it changes.
  • Is my llms.txt up to date? If not, say what generating a new one will publish and cost.
  • Open the theme file that renders my FAQ section and tell me whether StoreSEO’s FAQ output will show there.

How Approvals Work

Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client’s own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.

Things to Know About Zed

  • Zed’s default is to ask before every tool action, reads included, so a catalog audit means several prompts. Allow only the read tools with per-tool keys such as mcp:storeseo:storeseo_list_resources and leave the write tools on confirm.
  • Setting agent.tool_permissions.default to allow removes Zed’s check. Then the confirmation StoreSEO asks the agent for in the chat is the only one, so use allow sparingly.
  • A token in settings.json is a secret. Revoke it in StoreSEO under Settings, AI Toolkit if the file is exposed.

Disconnect

Remove the StoreSEO server in Zed, then revoke the connection or the access token in the StoreSEO app under Settings, AI Toolkit, where every connected client is listed.
