ChatGPT dots Sitemaps and indexing

Manage sitemaps and indexing with ChatGPT dots

Managing sitemaps and indexing with a ChatGPT dot means letting an always-on agent keep an eye on which products, collections, pages and articles are excluded or noindexed through StoreSEO, so a flag set by mistake does not sit unnoticed for months.

Set up ChatGPT dots for StoreSEO

Skip this if ChatGPT dots is already connected. The full guide, with the alternatives, is on the ChatGPT dots page.

  1. 1

Create the StoreSEO app in ChatGPT

OpenAI's help center says plugins are shared across dots and ChatGPT, so you set StoreSEO up once. In ChatGPT on the web, turn on Developer mode under Settings, Security and login, open Plugins, select the plus button and create an app named StoreSEO with this MCP server URL and OAuth. Sign in when the browser asks: pick your Shopify store and approve access. If ChatGPT already has the StoreSEO app, skip this step.

  2. 2

Make sure your dot can see it

Open your dot's profile, then Customize and Plugins, and check StoreSEO is connected. Then give your dot a first task that names StoreSEO.

    Prompt
Using StoreSEO, show me my store's SEO score breakdown.

How does this work in ChatGPT dots?

Indexing flags are the opposite of image alt text: a single wrong one is costly and invisible. A product set to noindex stays out of search results, and nothing on your storefront looks different. That makes a read-only watcher valuable. Schedule a dot to call storeseo_list_resource_sitemaps for each resource type, products, collections, pages and articles, filtering on noindex, nofollow and sitemap exclusion, and to report anything on the list you did not intend. Keep a short note in the task of what is deliberately hidden, such as a thank-you page, so the report highlights only surprises.

Changing a flag is one resource at a time through storeseo_update_resource_sitemap, which writes Shopify metafields for sitemap_disabled, no_index and no_follow. It spends no AI credit, but it changes whether search engines can find a page, so the dot should say which resource and which flag before it acts and wait for your yes in a conversation. The HTML sitemap is a longer thread: storeseo_get_html_sitemap_settings reads the state, storeseo_list_sitemap_menus gives you the menu edit links, and storeseo_update_html_sitemap with setup_step 1 generates the page. There is no step 2 in the agent flow, because you add the sitemap link to a menu yourself, and then step 3 marks setup complete.

Because of that manual step and the replace-the-whole-config behavior of the settings call, set the HTML sitemap up in a chat with the dot walking you through it, and leave the dot's scheduled work to the flag audit.

ChatGPT dots + StoreSEO Illustrative session
  1. You: Using StoreSEO, which of my products are noindexed?

  2. storeseo_list_resource_sitemaps read-only
  3. ChatGPT dots: Two products are noindexed: Gift Card and Linen Shirt. The first looks intended; the second is a best seller. Remove the noindex flag from Linen Shirt?

  4. You: Yes, remove it.

  5. storeseo_update_resource_sitemap needs approval
  6. ChatGPT dots: Done. The product is no longer noindexed and I will list flags again on the next run.

What to ask ChatGPT dots

Prompt 1
Every Tuesday, use StoreSEO to list products and pages that are noindexed or excluded from the sitemap, and flag any that are not on this list of intentional ones. Report only.
Prompt 2
Set the collection Old Stock to noindex and tell me which flag you are writing before you do it.
Prompt 3
Walk me through setting up the HTML sitemap and tell me when I need to add the menu link myself.
  • Which of my products are set to noindex or excluded from the sitemap?
  • Exclude the product Gift Card Test from the sitemap and set it to noindex.
  • Set up an HTML sitemap for my store and tell me which menu to add it to.
  • Are any of my blog posts set to nofollow?
  • Remove noindex from the page About Us.

What StoreSEO does: sitemaps and indexing

StoreSEO controls two things here: per-resource sitemap flags (left out of the XML sitemap, noindex, nofollow) and an HTML sitemap page. The agent lists flags, changes them one resource at a time and walks you through the HTML sitemap setup.

  1. 1

    List the flags

The agent lists products, collections, pages or articles with their sitemap, noindex and nofollow flags, filtered as you ask.

  2. 2

    Change one resource

After your yes it sets the flags on one resource, which writes the matching Shopify metafields.

  3. 3

    Re-read before reporting

Flags can also change in the StoreSEO app, so the agent re-lists before telling you the current state.

  4. 4

    Create the HTML sitemap

It reads the HTML sitemap settings, then generates and enables the page.

  5. 5

    Add it to a menu

It lists your navigation menus with their edit links; you add the sitemap link to a menu in Shopify admin, then the agent marks setup complete.

Rules ChatGPT dots follows

  • A noindex flag removes a page from search results, so the agent names the resource and waits for your yes.
  • The agent re-lists flags in the same turn before telling you their current state.
  • Adding the sitemap link to a menu is a step you do in Shopify admin; no tool does it.
  • HTML sitemap settings are read before every update, because an update replaces them.

In ChatGPT dots

A flag change affects whether search engines can find a page, and a scheduled dot has nobody to confirm it. Keep the timer to storeseo_list_resource_sitemaps reads and make flag changes in a chat. The HTML sitemap settings call replaces the whole config, so the dot must read it first. The menu link is added by you, because the chosen menu is not stored and no tool adds it.

What runs without asking. Reads such as SEO scores, store listings, settings and Google reports run straight away. Generating a preview spends AI credit but writes nothing, and StoreSEO tells the agent to say what a generation will cost before it runs one. Applying content, optimizing images, changing settings, publishing llms.txt or agents.md, writing a product description and deleting anything wait for your yes in the conversation. That yes is an instruction the agent follows, not a lock on the server, so your client's own tool-approval setting is the hard stop.

Questions

Can my dot noindex pages on a schedule?

It could if told to, but we would not. A wrong noindex hides a page from search and looks fine on the storefront. Let the dot report flags weekly and change them in a chat.

Does the dot set up the HTML sitemap for me?

Mostly. It generates the page with storeseo_update_html_sitemap and hands you the menu links, but you add the link to a menu yourself before the final step marks setup complete.

What is the difference between excluding a page from the sitemap and noindex?

Excluding a resource leaves it out of your XML sitemap, so crawlers are not pointed at it. Noindex tells search engines not to show the page in results even if they find it. StoreSEO sets each flag separately per resource.

Can the agent add the HTML sitemap to my menu?

No. The agent generates the HTML sitemap and lists your menus with their edit links, and you add the sitemap link to a menu in Shopify admin. Then the agent can mark setup complete.

Do sitemap tools need a paid plan?

No. The sitemap tools work on every active StoreSEO plan.

Why does the agent check the flags again before answering?

Sitemap flags can also be changed in the StoreSEO app outside the conversation, so an earlier listing may be stale. Re-reading in the same turn keeps the answer accurate.
