FAQ Schema After Google Removed Rich Results
Written by M Asif Rahman
Google removed FAQ rich results from search on 7 May 2026, so adding FAQ schema no longer earns the expandable snippet it used to. It still matters: FAQ schema gives Google and AI assistants a clean, structured answer to quote, and that citation value did not go away with the rich result.

TL;DR: what changed, and what to do about it
| Before 7 May 2026 | After 7 May 2026 | Your action |
|---|---|---|
| FAQ schema could show an expandable Q&A snippet directly in Google search results | Google stopped showing the FAQ rich result for almost all sites | Keep your FAQ schema. Stop expecting a rich snippet from it. |
| FAQ schema was sold mainly as a “get more space in Google” tactic | That space is gone for FAQ markup specifically | Reframe FAQ schema as a retrieval aid for AI assistants, not a search-results trick |
| FAQ content lived in free-form paragraphs on many Shopify pages | Structured Q&A pairs are easier for ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews to lift verbatim | Mark up your highest-intent FAQs with FAQPage schema even without a rich result |
| Merchants assumed FAQ schema was declining in value | The HowTo rich result was removed earlier the same way; both removals were about search-results real estate, not about structured data itself | Treat FAQPage schema as retrieval infrastructure, not a search-results feature |
This page is StoreSEO’s FAQ-schema spoke of the Shopify SEO checklist, kept current as the rules change.
What Exactly Changed, and When?
On 7 May 2026, Google Search Central confirmed it had removed the FAQ rich result from search for almost all sites, keeping it only for a small set of government and health authority domains. This followed Google’s earlier removal of the HowTo rich result, which used the same FAQPage and HowTo structured-data types to win extra visual space in results. Both changes affected how search results look. Neither one changed how FAQPage schema is read by crawlers, including the AI crawlers that feed ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
The practical effect for a Shopify store: if you added FAQ schema expecting the expandable blue dropdown under your listing, that specific visual benefit is gone. If you added it so a machine reading your page could tell which text block answers which question, that benefit is unchanged.
Both removals changed how search results look, not how FAQPage or HowTo schema is read by crawlers.
Does FAQ Schema Still Help at All?
Yes, for three reasons that have nothing to do with the rich result that was removed.
- It still tells a crawler exactly which answer matches which question.
FAQPageschema states the pairing directly; a plain paragraph makes an AI system infer it from context. - AI Overviews and chat assistants still draw on structured content more reliably than loose prose when they need a short, quotable answer. Removing the rich result did not remove the underlying retrieval advantage of clean Q&A structure, it only removed the on-page visual reward for having it.
- It remains a cheap, low-risk addition. It costs nothing to maintain once it is in place, and nothing about the 7 May 2026 change makes it a liability.
The only wrong move is continuing to sell FAQ schema internally as a snippet tactic, one of the claims the 11 Shopify SEO myths, checked against Google’s docs post already retires.
A crawler reads this structure whether or not Google shows a rich result for it.
What Should You Do With Your Existing Markup?
Leave it in place. There is no cleanup required and no penalty for keeping FAQPage schema on pages where the rich result no longer appears. Three things are worth checking instead of removing anything:
- Match the schema to real, visible FAQ content. Google’s structured-data guidelines have always required the marked-up question and answer to be visibly present on the page, not hidden metadata. That rule did not change and is easy to drift away from after a theme edit.
- Keep answers short and self-contained. A sentence that only makes sense with the paragraph before it is harder for an AI assistant to lift cleanly than a two-to-four-sentence answer that stands on its own.
- Stop treating near-identical FAQ posts as a content strategy. The common Shopify SEO problems page already covers the risk of splitting one topic across too many pages, and FAQ schema itself is not immune to that mistake.
None of these three require removing or rewriting your schema from scratch.
How Do FAQs Help AI Answers Now?
With the rich result gone, FAQ schema’s remaining job is to be the easiest possible text for a language model to quote accurately. That means a direct question as the heading, a two-to-four sentence answer directly underneath it, and no dependency on surrounding paragraphs to make sense. StoreSEO’s FAQ Schema tool generates that structure automatically from the Q&A pairs you write, and its companion storefront widget displays the same content to human visitors, so the markup and the visible page never drift apart.
One set of Q&A pairs, two outputs that are easy to let drift apart by hand.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Did Google remove all rich results, or just FAQ?
Google removed the FAQ rich result on 7 May 2026, and had already removed the HowTo rich result before that. Other rich results, including product, review and recipe markup, were not affected by either change.
2. Should I remove FAQ schema from my Shopify store now?
No. There is no penalty for keeping FAQPage schema, and it still helps AI assistants parse your Q&A content accurately. Removing it would only remove a retrieval advantage for no benefit.
3. Will FAQ schema ever get a rich result again?
Google has not announced a return date, and this post never promises one. Treat the current state as the baseline rather than waiting for a reversal.
4. Does FAQ schema help with ChatGPT or Gemini citations?
It helps indirectly, by making your question-and-answer content easier for a crawler to parse cleanly. It does not guarantee a citation in any specific AI assistant’s answer.
5. What is the difference between FAQ schema and a storefront FAQ widget?
FAQ schema is structured data read by crawlers and is usually invisible to human visitors. A storefront FAQ widget is the visible accordion or list your customers read. StoreSEO’s FAQ tool can generate both from the same Q&A pairs so they stay in sync.
6. How many FAQ posts does a Shopify SEO blog actually need?
Fewer than most blogs publish. One well-maintained FAQ pillar per topic beats several overlapping posts competing for the same queries, the same cannibalisation risk the common Shopify SEO problems page covers in more detail.
